Job Description

Job Title: Transportation Dispatch Assistant

Salary Scale: Part‑Time / Non‑Benefited Position, $17.00 per hour, 20 hours per week

Reports To: Supervisor of Transportation

Proposed

Hours:

6:30 a.m. – 8:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. – 5 p.m., daily

Summary: Under the direction of the Transportation Supervisor, performs complex, specialized, repetitive radio dispatch and phone communications. Assists in planning and scheduling student transportation routes as necessary.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Operate a two‑way radio and respond to calls on telephone and two‑way radio.
  • Communicate both oral and written information to internal staff and the general public in a professional manner.
  • Answer routing questions for school staff and general public in a prompt and courteous manner.
  • Gather, assemble, tabulate, check, and file data.
  • Sort and input necessary data into the computer spreadsheets and reports as requested.
  • Review, verify, process, and distribute printed forms, lists, and documents.
  • Assist in assigning and re‑assigning of substitute drivers.
  • Assign field trips and other extra trips in accordance with departmental procedures.
  • Work proactively with all staff and departments.
  • Operate a variety of office machines and equipment such as calculator, typewriter, copier, computers and related software.
  • Must be able to multi‑task.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Supervisor of Transportation.
Qualifications

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Any combination of education, training, and/or experience which demonstrate ability to perform the required duties. A typical qualifying background would include a minimum of graduation from high school or equivalent, and experience in record keeping and creating spreadsheets.

Valid Virginia Driver’s license required.

Knowledge of: Principles and practices of record keeping, modern office methods and equipment, including data processing and Microsoft computer applications; basic math; interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy. Clerical, oral and written communication skills. Telephone techniques and etiquette. Operation of business machines including a two‑way radio. Basic topography, routing and scheduling.

Experience:

Minimum Requirements:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED)

Language

Skills:

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one‑on‑one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

Mathematical

Skills:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to sit and climb or balance. The employee must be able to lift overhead, above the shoulders, and horizontally.
