Job Description
Perform a combination of equipment operations, preventive maintenance, and manual labor tasks related to roadway maintenance. Perform emergency roadway operations as an essential employee.
How You Will Contribute- Operate and maintain light and medium‑duty equipment for maintenance, construction, snow, and ice removal; clear roadways of snow, ice, debris and clean up after accidents; provide traffic control.
- Operate and maintain heavy‑duty highway equipment and vehicles for maintenance and construction tasks.
- Determine and demonstrate proper work‑site protection techniques, identify hazards and make safety suggestions, wear personal protective equipment, and maintain knowledge of current safety rules, regulations, OSHA/VOSHA, MUTCD, and VDOT safety regulations.
- Participate as a working crew member to complete projects, perform manual labor, use hand and power tools, and assist on projects.
- Perform maintenance repairs, replacements, preventive maintenance; complete pre‑trip inspections for vehicles or equipment operated.
- Install, maintain and remove traffic control devices for work zones, detours, lane closures, etc., using the MUTCD; assist in tracking inventory and maintaining records.
- Effective oral and written communication.
- Follow oral and written instructions, read and interpret work plans and specifications, and complete accurate work documentation.
- Maintain inventory records and complete simple paperwork.
- Obtain and maintain a valid CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment; comply with DOT and VDOT policies when operating CDL equipment.
- Operate and maintain hand and power tools.
- Operate and maintain light and medium‑duty equipment used for highway maintenance and repair.
- Perform heavy manual labor.
- Read and follow oral and written instructions; read and interpret plans and sketches.
- Work on a team to complete work assignments.
- Apply knowledge of work zone safety, traffic controls, flagging operations, MUTCD, federal and state regulations regarding traffic control devices.
- Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods and procedures.
- Skill in operating and maintaining hand and power tools.
- Skill in operating and maintaining light, medium and heavy duty equipment used for highway maintenance and repair.
- Skills related to materials, methods, and procedures for performing highway maintenance and operating equipment.
- Working knowledge of work zone traffic control standards and techniques.
- Effective oral and written communication.
- Obtain a CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter; comply with DOT and VDOT policies.
- Perform heavy manual labor.
- Read and follow oral and written instructions.
- Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and procedures.
- Safety shoes required.
- Skill in operating and maintaining hand and power tools.
- Skill in operating and maintaining light, medium and heavy duty equipment used for highway maintenance and repair.
- Training, experience or education in Maintenance, Vehicle Operations or related field desired.
- Experience in emergency operations including snow removal, storms and accident clean‑up.
- Experience in roadway maintenance and construction.
- Experience performing preventive maintenance and minor equipment repairs.
- Valid Commercial Driver’s License with appropriate endorsements.
