Job DescriptionACPS is seeking Substitute Bus Drivers for the 2025-26 School Year.

Schedule: Part‑time, as needed
SUMMARYThe Substitute School Bus Driver operates a school bus and other vehicles to transport students to and from designated locations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES- Conducts pre‑trip inspection of the school bus prior to every trip for defects.
- Uses established routes and designated bus stops.
- Operates bus on the approved time schedule.
- Reports bus accidents and student injuries to authorities.
- Conducts emergency evaluation drills in keeping with division regulations.
- Drives defensively under varying traffic conditions and inclement weather.
- Reports personal absences in time for supervisor to secure a substitute driver.
- Reports bus defects to supervisor.
- Establishes favorable working relationships with other drivers, teachers, students, and other school staff.
- Demonstrates knowledge of state laws and local ordinances.
- Complies with dress code.
- Utilizes professional conduct at all times.
- Communicates effectively with parents, colleagues, school personnel and everyone within the confines of the job.
- Supervise students while riding the bus.
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTSSatisfactory health condition as certified by a competent medical authority. Must demonstrate the ability to successfully complete the Virginia Education Department training curriculum for school bus drivers and obtain a Commercial Driver’s License with appropriate school bus endorsements within the probationary period. Complete state and county requirements of twenty hours of classroom and twenty hours of behind‑the‑wheel instruction. No reckless driving or driving under the influence convictions within five years and/or fewer than two moving violations within 12 months of employment.
English language proficiency is required per Code of Virginia 46.2-341.14.
- Meets school bus driver certification requirements with minimum hours of instruction and satisfactorily passes the knowledge examination.
- Meets state requirements for appropriate licensing.
- Meets state physical examination requirements.
- Meets local and or state standards for driving test.
- Meets local and or state standards for driver record check.
- Has successfully completed the National Red Cross First Aid Course.
- Has the ability to operate all vehicle types used in transporting students in the school division.
- Has the ability to operate radio communication when necessary.
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one‑on‑one and small group situations.
REASONING ABILITYAbility to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
PHYSICAL CONDITIONS AND NATURE OF WORK CONTACTSWork is typically performed inside and around the exterior of a school bus. Frequent bending, stooping, crawling and climbing to inspect the bus and under it is necessary. Occasional lifting of at least fifty pounds is required. Frequent contact with driver supervisors and students is required. Occasional contact with principals, parents and the general public is required. Occasional meetings with principals and parents are necessary.
The person shall have no impairment of the use of a foot, leg, hand, finger, or an arm, and no other structural defects or limitations likely to interfere with the ability to control and safely drive a school bus.
