Job DescriptionPosition Summary
Under the general supervision of the Transportation Supervisor, the Substitute Car Driver/Monitor is responsible for the safe and efficient transportation of students using a district vehicle that does not require a CDL. This role combines driving responsibilities with student supervision duties, ensuring safety, compliance, and appropriate student behavior at all times.
Key Responsibilities
Transportation Duties
- Safely transport students to and from school.
- Conduct pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections to ensure cleanliness, safety, and proper working condition.
- Ensure all communication devices are functioning properly prior to departure.
- Observe traffic laws, road signs, and district transportation procedures at all times.
- Report mechanical issues, traffic violations, or accidents promptly to the Transportation Supervisor.
- Ensure routine vehicle maintenance (e.g., oil changes) and coordinate transport to maintenance/repair facilities.
- Assist driver (when acting in monitor capacity) with backing and maneuvering the vehicle safely.
Student Supervision & Safety
- Maintain order and discipline in a courteous and professional manner in accordance with district policies.
- Ensure no student is left unattended without appropriate adult supervision.
- Assist students with boarding, seating, and exiting the vehicle safely.
- Secure and monitor seat belts, harnesses, and wheelchair restraints as required.
- Supervise and support students with special needs, including operating specialized equipment when necessary.
- Attend to individual student needs during transport.
- Monitor overall student safety while the vehicle is in operation.
Emergency & Compliance
- Maintain current knowledge of emergency evacuation procedures and safety protocols.
- Respond appropriately in emergency situations, including evacuating students and administering basic first aid if necessary.
- Inventory emergency and first aid supplies and report deficiencies.
- Abide by all federal, state, and local laws and regulations related to pupil transportation.
Communication & Documentation
- Maintain accurate records and submit required reports in a timely manner.
- Assist in documenting student behavior and transportation-related incidents.
- Communicate effectively with drivers, supervisors, staff, students, and parents as needed.
Professional Expectations
- Participate in required training, in-service meetings, and professional development.
- Maintain current knowledge of safe transportation practices.
- Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of traffic laws, safety regulations, and pupil transportation procedures.
- Ability to understand and relate to children, including those with special needs.
- Strong communication, organization, and problem‑solving skills.
- Ability to remain calm and effective under pressure, especially in emergencies.
- Ability to follow directions and established procedures.
- Physical ability to assist students and move throughout the vehicle as needed.
- Visual and auditory acuity (with correction if necessary).
Minimum Qualifications
- Education: High School Diploma or GED
- License/Certification: Valid Driver’s License; completion of Non-CDL driver training
- Experience: Prior experience transporting children or working in a school setting preferred
