Since 1982, the California Health Collaborative (CHC) has a long history of working with youth and their families through culturally responsive and community-centered public health programming. With a mission of “changing lives by improving health and wellness", CHC is committed to addressing and advocating for health justice among California’s underserved and underrepresented communities who have limited access to resources, and often face barriers related to culture, language, income, race, education, gender, geography, or immigration status.

SUMMARY

The California Health Collaborative is seeking a Youth Engagement Coordinator to join the Healing, Equity, Advocacy and Leadership (HEAL) Project in Visalia. With support from the Senior Director and Project Coordinator, the Youth Engagement Coordinator will lead the HEAL Team in creating opportunities for authentic youth engagement in art, healing activities, leadership and advocacy. The HEAL Project is a Tulare County–based substance use disorder prevention program serving youth ages 14–19, including Latinx, African American, Asian American, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, and LGBTQ+ youth, as well as young people with lived experience in the juvenile justice system, foster care, or alternative education.

The program uses community-centered, trauma-informed, and healing-centered approaches to amplify youth voices, partner with them in leading policy and systems change, and support them people with trauma-informed support services to disrupt the root causes of substance use disorders and center community healing among BIPOC, Latinx, AANHPI and LGBT+ youth and their families.

In addition to Youth Engagement Coordinator duties, this position will dedicate approximately 20% (8 hours per week) of time to Community Health Worker (CHW) and Enhanced Care Management (ECM) support activities, in coordination with supervising care management staff and program leadership.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
  • Consults with the HEAL Leadership Team relative to planning, policy, and program direction.
  • Presents and models values and behavior consistent with inclusivity, respect, and affirmation of all youth identities.
  • Coordinates efforts to reduce stigma around substance use disorders, accessing mental health resources and supporting youth through a social justice and harm reduction lens.
  • Assists with the development and implementation of an outreach plan to recruit youth for the HEAL project that creates safety and acceptance for all youth, including youth with the highest needs, to access the project’s resources.
  • Builds intentional, supportive relationships with young people and demonstrates a commitment to disrupting adultism by building support for youth power and voice in program and community decisions. This includes actively stepping back to allow youth to step forward in program decision making, elevating youth voices and creating space for youth in community and program decisions.
  • Supports in reducing barriers for youth participation by identifying methods to meet youth where they are at, identifying modes of transportation to support youth in accessing program activities, and on occasion transports youth in personal vehicles.
  • Be available to meet with youth and adult program participants during the school day, after school or on weekends or evenings as required to meet the needs of the community.
  • Ensure youth are central to the planning of all program activities and ensure authentic youth engagement in the project’s efforts in Visalia.
  • Assists with the integration of family engagement to the project’s efforts in Visalia, recognizing the role family, parents and adults play in advancing community healing and supporting positive youth development.
  • Assists the team in building support for restorative circles on school campuses for youth at-risk of suspension and actively leads circles with the team on campuses throughout Visalia during the school day and after school.
