The Feeding Assistant provides dining assistance to residents who do not have complicated feeding problems and who have been approved by the interdisciplinary team for participation in the Feeding Assistant Program. Feeding Assistants work under the supervision of licensed nursing staff to ensure residents receive safe, respectful, and supportive assistance during meals.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities- Assist residents with dining and hydration needs during meals
- Utilize proper feeding techniques learned through state‑approved training
- Encourage resident independence and dignity during mealtimes
- Observe and report changes in eating patterns or resident condition to nursing staff
- Record resident meal intake accurately after meals
- Follow infection control and safe food handling practices
- Respond appropriately to resident behaviors and needs
- Maintain a calm, positive, and respectful dining environment
- Work under the supervision of an RN or LVN/LPN
- Follow facility safety and emergency procedures, including Heimlich maneuver protocols
- Assistance limited to residents approved by the interdisciplinary team
- Avoid assisting residents with complicated feeding problems such as difficulty swallowing, recurrent lung aspirations, tube or IV feedings
- Must successfully complete the facility’s state‑approved 8‑hour Feeding Assistant Training Program before independently assisting residents
- Training topics include feeding techniques, hydration assistance, communication and interpersonal skills, resident rights, infection control, safety and emergency procedures, and recognizing and reporting changes in resident condition
- High school diploma or equivalent (preferred)
- Previous healthcare or caregiving experience (preferred)
- Compassionate and patient‑centered approach
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
- Ability to follow instructions and facility policies
- Frequent standing, walking, reaching, and assisting residents
- Ability to lift, push, or pull as needed during resident assistance
- Ability to work in a fast‑paced dining environment
- Skilled nursing facility setting
- Low to moderate noise level
- Team‑oriented and resident‑focused environment
