The purpose of this position is to protect and promote health, prevent illness and injury, and alleviate suffering through nursing diagnosis and treatment. Demonstrates leadership in the professional practice setting through oversight of the interdisciplinary healthcare team to provide holistic care and advocate for patients and families served.
Qualifications- License/Certification: CA RN license (required).
- BLS education (required).
- Preferred: BSN, MSN, or currently enrolled in an RN‑BSN program.
The nurse’s practice is guided by the Code of Ethics. Professional behavior includes interactions with co‑workers, displaying our values, treating everyone respectfully, and maintaining patient confidentiality within legal and regulatory parameters. The nurse identifies high‑risk patients and initiates intervention of ancillary departments, acts as a patient advocate, and assists patients in developing skills to advocate for themselves. Care is delivered in a non‑judgmental, nondiscriminatory manner that preserves patient autonomy, dignity, and rights.
The nursing process is utilized through assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation.
The nurse collects clinical data to monitor quality and effectiveness of nursing care, identifies aspects of care important for quality monitoring, formulates recommendations to improve nursing practice or patient outcomes, and assists in the development and implementation of policies, procedures, and practice guidelines to improve quality of care. Participation in interdisciplinary teams, QI studies, task forces, or committees is required, as is independent identification of problematic areas, problem‑solving, sharing findings of studies, and collaborating and communicating with patients, families, and other healthcare providers.
TeamLeader Responsibilities (Essential for specific department)
- Primary clinical resource for staff on assigned unit.
- Role model and mentor for staff.
- Act as the Nurse Manager Representative in absence.
- Provide leadership and support for staff through effective problem solving and decision making.
- Serve as a clinical resource and mentor to preceptors and new employees during orientation.
- Provide input on employee evaluations.
- Assist float staff with orientation and ensure they feel welcomed.
- Manage staff and patient flow: assign staff based on skills, schedule shifts, ensure timely shift reports, monitor breaks, and communicate staffing needs.
- Coordinate care in high‑risk/emergent situations and keep Nurse Manager/Director/Nursing Supervisor informed.
- Ensure collaboration between staff, physicians, and other providers, document and report patient care issues.
- Provide employee guidance and alert the Nurse Manager of counseling needs.
- Provide patient care as needed and make fiscally responsible decisions regarding staffing and use of supplies.
- Assign patients to infusion chairs and initiate nursing intake.
- Educate patients on upcoming medications and therapies.
- Start peripheral IVs or access central venous devices (PICC, Port‑a‑Cath) and administer infusions per physician orders.
- Monitor vital signs and patient status throughout treatment.
- Perform medication reconciliation and obtain patient history.
- Administer medications (IV, IM, SQ, PO), IV hydration, blood transfusions, and dressing changes.
