Qualifications- License /Certification
Required:- CA RN Licence
- CNOR
- BLS
- ACLS within one year of hire/transfer
- Education Required: Completion of a recognized RNFA training program.
- Education Preferred: BSN, MSN, or currently enrolled in an RN‑BSN program.
- Experience
Required:
At least two years of perioperative RN experience, preferably in both the scrub and circulating roles.
- Assists on all surgical procedures as directed by the surgeon.
- Functions as the first assistant in the general and obstetric surgical suites.
- Assists the surgeon by providing intra‑operative tissue retraction.
- Assists with intra‑operative hemostasis.
- Assists with intra‑operative tissue manipulation using surgical instruments and suture material as directed by the surgeon.
- Assists with intra‑operative wound closure, suturing tissue with instruments and suture material as directed by the surgeon.
- Pre‑operative: assists with review of the procedure, opening and set‑up of the OR suite, pre‑operative counts or patient assessment as coordinated with the circulating RN, transfer of the patient to the OR bed, anesthesia induction if requested by the circulating RN, and positioning the patient for the surgical procedure.
- Inter‑operative: scrub in, assist in draping the patient, assist the surgeon within standardized procedures, and assist in counts as needed.
- Post‑operative: assists with application of the patient’s dressings, transfer from the OR bed, accompanies the patient to the PACU if required, and cleans up and turns over the operating room.
- RN Circulator: assesses basic patient needs, recognizes abnormal diagnostic data and potential problems, modifies assessment criteria based on age and other needs, implements the patient’s plan of care, facilitates patient transfer, understands patient care equipment and instrumentation, ensures medication administration, maintains communication and emotional support, provides personal hygiene, maintains complete medical records, coordinates admission, transfer, and discharge, performs other duties, and demonstrates the necessary knowledge and skills for the unit or work area.
