QualificationsLicense / Certification:

Education:
- Required:
Completion of recognized RNFA training program. - Preferred: BSN, MSN, or currently enrolled in RN‑BSN program.
Experience:
- Required:
At least two years of perioperative RN experience, preferably in the scrub as well as the circulating role.
RN Cardiac First Assistant
- Assist on all cardiovascular surgical procedures as directed by the surgeon.
- Functions as the first assistant at surgery in the general and obstetric surgical suites.
- Assist the surgeon by providing intraoperative tissue retraction.
- Assist with intraoperative hemostasis and tissue manipulation.
- Use surgical instruments and suture material to manipulate tissue as directed by the surgeon.
- Assist with intraoperative wound closure and suturing tissue.
- Preoperative tasks: review of procedure prior to the case; opening and set up of the operating room suite; performing counts or patient assessment coordinated with the circulating RN; transferring the patient to the OR bed; anesthesia induction if requested; and positioning the patient for the surgical procedure.
- Interoperative tasks: scrub in, assist in draping, assist the surgeon within standardized procedures, and assist in counts as needed.
- Postoperative tasks: application of the patient’s dressings; transfer from the OR bed; accompany the patient to the PACU if required; clean up and turnover of the operating room; assist with specialty procedures such as minimally invasive vein/arterial harvesting, deep fascia closure, insertion of invasive monitoring lines, and cardiac sternal wound closure.
RN Circulator
- Assess basic patient needs, recognize abnormal diagnostic data, and potential problems related to surgical intervention, and communicate appropriate information to the physician and team.
- Modify assessment criteria based on patient age, psychosocial and physical needs.
- Implement the patient’s plan of care by evaluating response to care, organizing and adjusting assignments as needed.
- Facilitate patient transfer to appropriate postoperative unit, ensuring safety and communication with receiving staff.
- Demonstrate knowledge of patient care equipment and instrumentation, including emergency carts.
- Ensure all medications are administered properly, including IVs as prescribed.
- Maintain clear communication and rapport with patient/family, providing emotional support and keeping them informed of progress.
- Ensure patient’s personal hygiene needs are met and the environment is clean and safe.
- Maintain a current and complete medical record; coordinate admission, transfer, and discharge with appropriate personnel and document observations, treatments, and outcomes.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
