Overview

The City of Visalia Public Works Department is recruiting for Equipment Mechanic and Senior Equipment Mechanic positions depending on qualifications (DOQ). Equipment and mechanical maintenance skills are required; work under general supervision. The Senior Equipment Mechanic is the advanced journey level position in the Equipment Maintenance Worker series, distinguished by the complexity of job assignments and the ability to diagnose and repair complex problems on a wide variety of vehicles and equipment.

Incumbents may be assigned to work in different areas of the fleet operation such as light or heavy shop, tire shop, or lube bay.

The ideal candidate will be a self‑starter and team player, able to communicate effectively in both written and oral form, and follow written and oral direction. They will be well organized, possess advanced knowledge of vehicle equipment maintenance and repairs, and be familiar with both basic hand tools and specialized diagnostic tools. The candidate should be able to work with other staff members, be open to suggestions, and thrive in a fast‑paced environment.

They must possess and maintain their own set of tools, receive an annual tool allowance, and follow safe work practices in accordance with City of Visalia policies and procedures.

Any combination of experience and education that likely provides the required knowledge, skill, and ability is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skill and abilities would be:

Equipment Mechanic:

• Two (2) years of experience in the maintenance and repair of gas and diesel powered equipment.
• Specialized training in the maintenance and repair of gas and diesel powered equipment.
• Specialized training in the maintenance and repair of vehicles and motorcycles with emphasis on Public Safety equipment.

Senior Equipment Mechanic:

• Four (4) years of experience in the maintenance and repair of gas, diesel and compressed natural gas powered equipment.
• Specialized training in the maintenance and repair of gas, diesel, and compressed natural gas powered equipment with emphasis on either heavy equipment or automotive/light equipment.
• Specialized training in the maintenance and repair of motorcycles with emphasis on Public Safety equipment.
• Specialized training in the maintenance and repair of firefighting apparatus and firefighting equipment.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Class B California Driver’s License with air brake endorsement by time of appointment.
