Life Coach (Life Skills Learning Center)

Reports To:

Program Supervisor

Position Summary

The Life Coach provides direct training services to consumers in Able's Life Skills Learning Center (a Day Training Activity Center). Responsibilities include implementing program curriculum, delivering center-based and community training, recording outcomes, addressing objectives in each consumer's Individual Program Plan (IPP), participating in consumer assessment, planning, and evaluation, and performing other duties as directed by the Program Manager. The Life Coach also drives a 9-passenger van for consumer transportation to/from the program and community integration training activities.

This role is under a program licensed by the State of California and vendorized through Regional Center; adherence to Title 22 and 17 regulations is required.

Qualifications

• One year of experience in a human services delivery system working with adults with developmental disabilities preferred.

• Commitment to program goals and consumer outcomes as outlined in the program design, and to community integration, critical skill development, normalization, and consumer-directed planning.

• Ability to communicate well and work as a team player. Ability to plan, organize, and implement consumer program plans and integrate them into an efficient training process. Proficient in written and verbal communication. Ability to maintain ongoing liaison with social service agencies in the community. Broad knowledge of disabilities.

• Desirable qualifications may include any combination of training, education, and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position; substitutions may be made for entry requirements.

• High School education or GED required. Must be at least 21 years of age. A valid California driver’s license, good DMV record, reliable transportation, and auto insurance required. All applicants must pass an educational and employment background check, drug screen, physical, and tuberculosis test. CPR and first aid certification required. Must pass FBI/DOJ background and fingerprint checks before employment.

Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

1. Key Position Responsibilities

  • Curriculum:
    Design and implement curriculum modules for consumers; address IPP objectives; maintain curriculum outcomes. Record consumer outcomes daily and collaborate with LS Counselor to document program goals and outcomes in relation to annual goals.
  • Consumer Safety:
    Maintain staff/consumer ratios, assist consumers as needed, encourage self-help, and ensure safety and well-being at all times.
  • Policies and Procedures:
    Follow agency policy, LSLC policy, accreditation standards, state licensing, and referral/funding criteria and regulations.

2. Safety

  • Operate and maintain the program facility and vehicles safely, ensuring compliance with agency policy and licensing provisions.
  • Perform vehicle safety inspections and maintain vehicle cleanliness.
  • Monitor consumers’ activities and environment to ensure safety; arrange for needed medical services and transportation as appropriate.

3. Corporate Culture

  • Adhere to general policies and procedures.

4. Training

  • Participate in meetings and training as appropriate to the agency, position, and personal needs.

  • May be cross-trained in other agency positions.

  • May be required to use personal vehicle to fulfill duties as necessary.

3. Other Duties

  • Other assignments as necessary and not limited to the listed duties.

Language Skills

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret documents; write reports and procedures; and speak effectively before groups.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to work with mathematical concepts and apply them to program monitoring, including fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve practical problems and interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Physical Demands

Typical physical demands include standing, using hands to manipulate objects, and occasional travel between locations. Lifting up to 10–25 pounds regularly, up to 50 pounds occasionally. Vision requirements include close, distance, color, and depth perception.

Work Environment

Work may involve moving parts, occasional exposure to wet/humid conditions, fumes, or airborne particles. Noise level is usually moderate to occasionally loud. Reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities.
