The OpportunityVista Unified School District needs caring, steady special education aides (also called paraprofessionals or instructional assistants) to support students with IEPs. Pick up day-to-day assignments that fit your week, or step into a long-term assignment where you become a familiar, trusted face for students. Some assignments are in resource or Special Day Class (SDC) classrooms. Others are 1:1 support for a single student.
Wherever you land, the heart of the job is the same: you are there so a student can show up, learn, and feel supported, day after day.
- Be there for your student(s): Provide 1:1 or small-group support to students with IEPs in resource, SDC, or inclusion classrooms, under the direction of the special education teacher.
- Open doors to learning: Help students work toward their IEP goals and practice skills the teacher has planned.
- Bring calm and consistency: Follow each student’s behavior support plan (BIP) and step in gently when a student needs help de-escalating or staying safe.
- Help with the everyday stuff: Support transitions, recess, and lunch routines. Some assignments include personal care, such as toileting and diapering.
- Keep everyone in the loop: Track behavior and academic progress, share updates with the classroom team, and keep student information confidential.
- Pitch in where needed: Prepare materials and handle classroom tasks as the teacher asks.
- Education: A bachelor’s degree in any field.
- Clearances: A background check (Live Scan fingerprinting) and a quick TB risk assessment. Live Scan cost reimbursed in your paycheck after your 10th day worked.
- Experience (a big plus): Paid or volunteer work with school-age children, especially as a teacher aide, paraprofessional, tutor, behavior technician, or in a special education setting.
- Heart: Patience, flexibility, and a steady way of showing up for kids.
