JOB SUMMARY:

Under the general direction of the Facilities Supervisor and leadership of the Senior Equipment Mechanic, performs semi-skilled maintenance and repair of the various types of heavy construction equipment, passenger vehicles, light and heavy-duty trucks, off-road and miscellaneous types of small equipment used by the District. Applies all standard safety practices.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Prioritizes routine lubrication, servicing, troubleshooting, overhauling and repairing of all District motorized equipment. Works jointly with the Senior Equipment Mechanic and other assigned personnel to ensure that work is performed in a timely and competent manner.
  • Dismantles, repairs and rebuilds components on various small equipment such as compressors, water pumps, soil compactors, brush chippers, etc.
  • Performs preventive maintenance tasks on District vehicles and equipment as scheduled.
  • Assists with performing Basic Inspection of Terminals (BIT) safety inspections and repairs.
  • Sweeps, cleans and maintains the cleanliness and orderliness of the equipment maintenance building.
  • Assist with the delivery and retrieval of vehicles and equipment from repair shops.
  • Outfits new vehicles with necessary safety lighting, toolboxes, racks, bumpers and communications equipment.
  • Keeps detailed service logs and maintenance records for all vehicles and equipment.
  • Orders and maintains minimum stock levels of consumable parts for vehicles and equipment.
  • Ensures safe work conditions by following District safety guidelines and safety-related directives, including but not limited to, using personal protective equipment as directed, operating District vehicles and equipment in a safe manner, and following District safety policies outlined in the Safe Work Practices manual.
  • Performs related work as assigned.
  • QUALIFICATIONS:

    Education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and two years of experience as an automotive mechanic (college or trade school-level automotive technology courses may be substituted for up to one year of experience). Experience or training in the maintenance, diagnosis and repair of passenger vehicles, light and heavy-duty trucks, off-road and construction equipment is required. Experience with Class A vehicle compliance programs (BIT), hydraulic and air brakes and vehicle electrical systems is preferred.

    All mechanics employed by the District must provide their own tools to perform the essential functions of the position.

    Must have a valid California driver's license and be acceptable to the District's automobile liability insurance carrier.

    Must establish and maintain effective working relations with other District personnel and promote good relations with the public.
