Responsibilities
Instruct courses in Cosmetology involving theory and skills applications. This 9‑month position focuses on instructing fundamental skills to large classes of beginning students, including shampooing, draping, roller setting, blow dry, curling iron, flat iron, hairstyling finishing techniques, hair coloring, permanent wave techniques, various haircutting techniques with shears, manicure, pedicure, basic facials, and nail enhancements. Faculty are expected to accept courses as assigned and may teach in non‑traditional venues such as evening, weekend, dual‑credit, blended, hyflex, or online courses.
Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to: recruitment, maintaining office hours, participating in college committees, promoting and supporting student extracurricular activities, participation in the mentor‑mentee program, participating in professional development, participating in the faculty evaluation program, working across campus departments and industry partners to develop pathway entry and exit points for students, and developing student communication, computation, and problem‑solving skills.
Normal schedule is Monday – Friday 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, physically present on campus, with some participation in evening and weekend activities possibly required.
This position reports to the Program Director of Cosmetology.
NOTE: Finalists may be asked to participate in a teaching demonstration.
Qualifications- Experience: Three years of full‑time wage‑earning experience as a licensed cosmetologist.
- Special Requirements: Current Cosmetology Operator License issued by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulations.
- Work experience teaching adult learners.
- Teaching experience in Cosmetology in public or private school, or postsecondary institution.
- Knowledge of: State and College laws, rules, policies, and procedures; subject matter;
Milady instructional content; professional development; trends in teaching/learning theory as they apply to cosmetology; ADA standards as they apply to instruction. - Skills in: Technology in support of instruction, particularly computer knowledge and technology as a teaching tool and as a work tool; conflict management; evaluating student performance; promoting and supporting related extracurricular activities.
- Ability to: Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; participate in college committees; work across departments to develop student communication, computation, and problem‑solving skills; curriculum implementation; demonstrate mastery of the fundamental skills outlined in the position description; effectively train, guide, and support adult learners with diverse backgrounds, learning styles, and professional experiences.
Restricted‑Sustained posture for prolonged periods; light lifting, some walking, pushing, pulling on a regular basis. Minimal hazard/exposure—standard office setting. Minor hazard—unpleasant exposure to chemicals associated with hair coloring, perming, nail, pedicure products, and procedures; unpleasant odors. Occasional exposure to risk, controlled by safety precautions. Environmental controls to assure health and comfort.
