Position: Construction Inspector I - Waco Area Office (Waco District)

Overview

The Waco Area Office in the Waco District is looking for a Construction Inspector I to oversee a variety of projects within McLennan County, including major bridge replacements and highway rehabilitations. The position offers outdoor and office work, opportunities to gain experience, and exposure to projects not common to many Area Offices. Salary/Plan Grade: B18 | Anticipated starting salary: $45,521 - $60,000/year

Responsibilities
  • Inspect construction methods and workmanship to ensure compliance with plans, specifications, and safety standards on roadways, bridges, traffic signals, airports, and related structures.
  • Attend pre-construction meetings and provide answers to questions from contractors and attendees.
  • Calculate payments due to contractors for work completed and monitor equipment utilization data and time/cost estimates.
  • Consult with Project Engineers, resident project representatives, and contractors on work progress and construction problems.
  • Ensure that roadways, bridges, and related highway structures and/or airport improvements are built in accordance with plans and specifications.
  • Monitor project phasing and traffic control plans or airport closure plans and ensure compliance with safety standards; inspect barricades and adjust traffic control devices as required.
  • Observe and inspect ongoing construction work; assist in engineering-related data collection, inspections, assessments, analysis, and plan development by others.
  • Document work progress and issues; perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications Education

High School Graduation or equivalent.

Experience

No experience required. Experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent. Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis.

Licenses and Certifications

Valid driver’s license; driving a state vehicle is required.

  • Methods for reviewing plans and specifications for compliance
  • Construction engineering policies and procedures
  • Inspection methods, procedures, and techniques
  • Testing methods, processes, and procedures
  • Basic traffic management and control procedures
  • Industry safety standards, guidelines, and codes
  • Applying engineering principles in job responsibilities
  • Public relations for maintaining effective working relationships
  • Using computers and related programs and systems
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Outdoor environmental conditions; exposure to noise, vibration, hazards, and weather
  • Required to wear protective gear (e.g., respirator, hard hat)
  • Medium work: lift up to 50 lbs; frequently lift or carry up to 25 lbs
  • Frequently crouch, bend, reach, and maneuver in various positions

This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical. A drug test is required prior to employment for safety-impact positions and the position is subject to random drug testing per applicable regulations.
