Position Information
TxDOT's Materials and Tests Division (MTD) is looking for a Construction Inspector II, III, or IV in the Structural Materials (STR) Section. The position is in the Waco, TX area and inspection work may be performed at multiple fabrication plants. STR provides support to bridge and highway construction projects statewide by performing in‑plant Quality Assurance (QA) structural product inspection, material and product testing, and manufacturing process oversight.
STR also provides oversight to the State’s Quality Monitoring (QM) program for the following: prestressed concrete girders, precast concrete drainage structures (pipe, box culverts, etc.) and other structural products and materials. We hire great people with a wide variety of talents.

Inspects fabrication methods and workmanship to ensure fabricators build bridges, drainage structures, and other non‑bridge structures in accordance with plans and specifications; acts as a consultant regarding work progress and problem resolution; may serve as the only QA inspector in a precast concrete fabrication plant. Responsible to a licensed professional engineer who has full authority for approval of all work. Work requires contact with fabricators.
May perform material tests and manufacturing process inspections at multiple fabrication plants. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.
Inspects fabrication methods and workmanship to ensure fabricators build bridges, drainage structures, and other non‑bridge structures in accordance with plans and specifications; acts as a consultant regarding work progress and problem resolution; may serve as the only QA inspector in a precast concrete fabrication plant; trains others. Responsible to a licensed professional engineer who has full authority for approval of all work.
Work requires contact with fabricators. May perform material tests and manufacturing process inspections at multiple fabrication plants. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.
