Job Summary

The Nurse Practitioner (NP) Primary Care is a licensed, certified healthcare provider who provides direct patient care and has prescriptive authority. They are credentialed, privileged, and billed as an independent provider by Medicare and Medicaid. The Advanced Practice Provider offers medical care based on the supervising physician's scope of practice and typically serves patients in an internal medicine, family medicine, geriatric, or pediatric clinic.

Functions of the Role
  • Assesses the physical and mental condition of patients by performing comprehensive or problem-focused physical examinations and medical histories.
  • Orders, collects, interprets, and evaluates laboratory and other diagnostic tests to assess patient problems and healthcare needs.
  • Prescribes, recommends, or uses medical drug therapies or other treatments and performs procedures following approved protocols, focusing on efficacy, safety, and cost.
  • Recommends interventions to modify behavior associated with health risks.
  • Formulates and implements comprehensive patient treatment plans based on assessments, evidence-based medicine, and standards of care; collaborates with physicians and team members when appropriate; evaluates patient response to care and its effectiveness.
  • Counsels patients and families on medical processes, illness management, medication, nutrition, and health promotion; discusses drug regimens and potential side effects or interactions with food supplements, over-the-counter medications, and herbal remedies.
  • Maintains appropriate records detailing the patient's treatment plans and outcomes; initiates timely consultation and referral when the problem exceeds scope of practice or expertise.
  • Provides consultation level services for conditions/problems related to the provider's specialty and training.
  • Performs invasive procedures specific to scope of practice and provider knowledge as delegated by supervising physician.
  • May provide care to patients in a team-based model, focusing on acute and chronic illness management and population health.

  • Texas RN licensure or RN licensure with compact privilege from a Nurse Licensure Compact state for RNs and LVNs, and Texas APRN.
  • Current license to practice as a Nurse Practitioner in the state of Texas.
  • Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire or transfer.
  • National Nurse Practitioner certification in area of specialty.
