Position: Zookeeper- Birds and Small Mammals

Minimum Starting Salary: $18.4349 per hour (Depending on qualifications) The City of Waco Seeks:

The Cameron Park Zoo is seeking a dedicated bird and small mammal keeper to join our team! This position assists in the day-to-day husbandry and care for around 60 species of native and exotic birds and mammals. Some examples include African penguin, meerkat, sloth, porcupine, macaws, raptors, waterfowl, and many more. We desire a hardworking and positive teammate with experience in habitat design, training, incubation, rearing, and guest interactions.

Minimum Qualifications:

Required:

  • Associates Degree in Zoology, Biological Sciences, or a related field
  • 1 year of animal care work experience
    • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid Texas Driver's License
Position Overview:

Under basic supervision, provides for the health and welfare of exotic and native animals in the City Zoo through diet preparation and feeding, enclosure maintenance, behavioral observation and training, enrichment, and health care maintenance and treatment.

Essential Functions:
  • Assists with the daily care, husbandry, and nutrition of assigned animals; resolves problems within scope of authority; duties may vary according to job assignment.
  • Monitors and maintains Zoo exhibits, identifies animal care issues, prepares, and distributes diets and supplements; monitors animal health issues, behavior and eating habits; maintains records; examines exhibit facilities and grounds to assure proper maintenance procedures are followed.
  • Assists with public education, community outreach and safety and security programs.
  • Operates City vehicles to safely transport animals (locally and long distance), pick up supplies, and move equipment to and from service locations in support of daily operations.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Complies with all policies and standards.
  • Supports the relationship between the City of Waco and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with residents, visitors, and City staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information.
