Performs maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of refrigeration, heating, and air‑condition in systems commonly installed in supermarkets, convenience stores, and cold storage facilities. Operates independently with minimal direct supervision, develops first‑line customer relations, and identifies potential sales opportunities.
Responsibilities- Perform prescribed routine maintenance procedures on supermarket refrigeration system and self‑contained temperature‑controlled merchandisers.
- Provide system knowledge to match customer needs with potential sales opportunities and complete rapid, accurate diagnosis.
- Manage truck inventory: order, receive, bill out, and maintain parts responsibly with minimal waste. Manage assigned vehicle within all company guidelines and maintain a clean vehicle.
- Complete necessary documents and electronic communication accurately, professionally, and timely, including use of hand‑held device for paperwork and invoicing.
- Utilize mirror and flashlight to check all joints, install PVC drain pipe, trim cases, install and adjust glass doors and frames, use temperature sensors, brazing, and soldering techniques, and determine proper coil layout in complex boxes.
- Identify pipe size and fittings by sight, perform refrigerant and oil conversions, test oil during conversion, and electric weld a variety of metals and joint types.
- Identify, troubleshoot, and correctly size thermostatic expansion valves.
- Work with pressure regulators, refrigerant flow controls, TEV troubleshooting, and tracing complex schematic diagrams.
- Understand low/high pressure oil systems, split condensing/low‑ambient controls, refrigerated equipment startup, EMS controls, CO2 refrigeration, new retail store refrigeration startup, airflow characteristics, motor VFDs, defrost types, compressor parameters, conventional refrigeration layout, parallel rack system layout, and advanced wiring diagrams.
- Demonstrate knowledge of gauge, scale, recovery, ECM, shaded pole, PSC, three‑phase motors, compressor parameters, oil differential pressure valves, and oil level controls.
- Detect and repair leaks on conventional systems and parallel racks, solder with copper‑to‑brass and copper‑to‑steel, conduct compressor diagnosis and replacements, troubleshoot and repair complex service calls, and adjust oil management systems.
- Serve as a mentor to other technicians and lead HVAC/R PM programs.
- Perform additional responsibilities as assigned.
- High School Diploma or GED (required). Preferred HVAC‑R Technical School Degree.
- External candidates: 7 years in the field or 5 years with certification from a technical school. Internal candidates: 3 years as a certified technician with completion of OJT & skills assessment.
- Valid driver’s license and a safe driving record in accordance with the fleet policy.
- Physically able to walk long distances, bench and crouch, climb ladders, work at high elevations, and lift up to 50 pounds repetitively.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; detail‑oriented and highly motivated.
- Strong mechanical aptitude, knowledge of basic maintenance tasks, and proficiency with hand tools.
- Ability to work nights and/or weekends as required.
- Basic refrigeration knowledge or experience with commercial refrigeration and HVAC preferred.
- Strong leadership and business acumen.
- EPA 608 Universal Certification.
- Superior decision‑making ability and paperwork skills.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and maintain a safe driving record per fleet policy.
