Position

This position works hand in hand with the laborer position to complete jobs. While the position primarily consists of operating heavy machinery (Blade), there are also laborer job functions that need to be completed as necessary.

Responsibilities
  • Operate various pieces of heavy equipment, including blade, shuttle buggy, loaders, excavators, dozers, graders, backhoes, and more.
  • Review and apply information from manuals for the specific equipment being operated.
  • Familiarize yourself with equipment and Daily Equipment Checklist.
  • Communicate with Project Manager/Foreperson regarding daily job specifications; operate equipment safely and responsibly.
  • Perform daily pre-start procedures: note service due dates, check fluid levels, and ensure equipment is in good running order; complete Daily Equipment Checklist.
  • Discuss anticipated production, materials moved, number of trucks, etc., with supervisor.
  • Coordinate with other equipment on the project; be aware of surrounding equipment.
  • When possible, leave equipment in accessible locations for the Equipment Mover.
  • Keep equipment clean to promote a positive image and support close-range inspections.
  • Follow directions and perform other duties as assigned.
  • Ability to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, the individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Education/Experience
  • Communicate appropriately with direct reports, co-workers, supervisors, and the public.
  • Be knowledgeable of materials and equipment needed to perform tasks.
  • Related experience in the construction field preferred.
Work Requirements
  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • Must pass pre-employment physical, drug screen, and criminal background check.
  • Adhere to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook.
  • Willingness to work in a team environment and assist co-workers or supervisors with other duties as required.
  • Maintain a current driver’s license that meets state requirements.
  • Willingness to travel and work away from home when required.
  • Willingness to work nights and weekends when necessary.
  • Wear personal protective equipment (PPE) in designated operations and production areas as stated by OSHA and/or MSHA (e.g., face shield, safety shoes, coveralls).
  • Compliance with all OSHA and/or MSHA regulations.
Knowledge/Skill Requirements
  • Previous knowledge of heavy equipment is preferred.
  • Preferred knowledge of dozer, loader, excavator, and backhoe experience.
  • Strong earth grading background and ability to match blue tops.
  • 2+ GPS grading experience preferred.
Physical Requirements

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Climbing, stooping, bending, squatting, frequent lifting, and other manual tasks as required.
  • Standing, walking, using hands and fingers to manipulate objects or controls, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk and hear.
  • May require sitting for extended periods.
  • Vision abilities (with correction) including near and far, peripheral, depth perception, and focus.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs on an ongoing basis.
  • Ability to climb in and out of a truck (3-4 steps; elevated cab).
Work Environment

Able to work in all weather conditions. May be exposed to fumes or airborne particles, chemicals, moving mechanical parts, high places, and electrical hazards. Noise levels may vary and can be loud in some areas.
