Position OverviewThis position works hand in hand with the laborer position to complete jobs. While the position primarily consists of operating heavy machinery (Blade), there are also laborer job functions that need to be completed as necessary.
Key Responsibilities- Operate various pieces of heavy equipment, including blade, shuttle buggy, loaders, excavators, dozers, graders, backhoes, etc.
- Be familiar with and incorporate information derived from the manuals for the individual equipment being operated.
- Be familiar with the equipment and Daily Equipment Checklist.
- Communicate with Project Manager/Foreperson as to the daily job specifications; operate the equipment in a safe and responsible manner.
- Perform daily pre-start procedures, e.g., note the service due date, check fluid levels and ensure the equipment to be used is in good running order; complete Daily Equipment Checklist.
- Discuss with supervisor the anticipated production, type of materials being moved, number of trucks, etc.
- Be aware of other equipment working on the project and coordinate to work with the other equipment.
- When possible, leave the equipment in a place that is readily accessible to the Equipment Mover.
- Keep the equipment clean. Wiping down equipment promotes a positive public image and enables the operator to inspect the equipment up close.
- Ability to follow directions.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Ability to perform the essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Be able to communicate appropriately with direct reports, co-workers, supervisors, and the public.
- Be knowledgeable of materials and equipment needed to perform tasks.
- Related experience in the construction field preferred.
- Must be 18 years or older.
- Must pass pre-employment physical, drug screen and criminal background check.
- Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook.
- Willingness to work in a team environment and assist co-workers or supervisors with other duties as required.
- Must maintain current driver's license that meets state requirements.
- Must be willing to travel and work away from home when required.
- Must be willing to work nights and weekends when necessary.
- Individuals are required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) in designated operations and production areas as stated by OSHA and/or MSHA. Protective equipment that may be required includes: face shield, safety (hard toe) shoes, and coveralls.
- Compliance with all OSHA and/or MSHA regulations.
- Previous knowledge of heavy equipment desired.
- Preferred knowledge of Dozer, Loader, Excavator & Backhoe experience.
- Strong background in earth grading and ability to match blue tops.
- 2+ GPS grading, with minimum experience.

- Job requires climbing, stooping, bending, squatting, frequent lifting of extensions chutes, stretching, sitting/driving, shifting gears, and covering/uncovering load when applicable.
- Able to stand, walk, use hands and fingers to manipulate objects or controls, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk and hear.
- May require sitting for extended periods of time.
- Vision abilities (with correction) include close, distance, peripheral, depth, and the ability to focus.
- Must be able to lift hood of truck unassisted; up to 50 lbs. on an ongoing basis.
