Overview

The Senior HVAC Mechanic II performs complex heating, ventilation, and air conditioning work in a State Hospital facility, maintaining safe and uninterrupted services in accordance with Texas Administrative Code, Life Safety Code, and industry standards. Duties include installation, adjustment, alteration, inspection, maintenance, repair, and restoration of HVAC equipment and facilities, training staff, managing records, and coordinating parts and materials.

Job Functions
  • Attend work regularly and may be required to work a specific shift schedule, rotating schedule, extended shift, or overtime. May serve on-call status on a rotating schedule.
  • Perform installation, adjustments, alterations, inspections, maintenance, repairs, and restorations of chilled water systems, direct exchange systems, refrigerated systems, heating systems, boilers/steam systems, and automated controls, including components such as coils, evaporators, condensers, fans, driers, air handlers, and pumps.
  • Design and perform preventative maintenance schedules for HVAC equipment, ensuring compliance with Life Safety Code standards.
  • Monitor and manage environmental control systems, troubleshoot equipment, analyze system history, and sample and monitor air quality.
  • Use hand tools, power tools, diagnostic systems, and safety equipment; maintain and repair tools; train others to use equipment.
  • Maintain accurate records of repairs, gauge readings, and work orders.
  • Coordinate parts and materials requirements; communicate needs to supply personnel.
  • Follow department schedules; work as a team member; operate authorized vehicles such as state motor‑pool vehicles and golf carts.
  • Participate in disaster response and/or continuity of operations as required, which may require alternate shifts or locations.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of installation, repair, and maintenance of cooling, refrigeration, and heating equipment.
  • Knowledge of general principles of pressure, vacuum, vaporization, heat conduction, and safety regulations.
  • Knowledge of Life Safety Code standards.
  • Knowledge of chilled water, direct exchange, refrigeration systems, and boilers/steam systems.
  • Knowledge of mechanical systems, electrical distribution systems, HVAC, refrigeration, and sanitation.
  • Technical knowledge of advanced Energy Management Systems (EMS) and electronic controls.
  • Skill in diagnosing malfunctions and determining appropriate repairs.
  • Skill in maintaining heating, ventilation, and air conditioning levels.
  • Skill in using tools and test equipment for HVAC maintenance and repair.
  • Skill in preventive maintenance and inspections of HVAC, steam, and ventilation systems.
  • Strategy for maintaining accurate records.
  • Ability to read and apply instructions, interpret drawings and schematics, work independently or in a team, communicate effectively, and meet vehicle driver requirements.
  • Ability to speak and read English, perform basic calculations, and perform labor‑intensive work requiring lifting 50-100 pounds and working in hot/cold conditions.
  • Ability to teach and train others to use HVAC equipment and tools safely.
Licensure, Certifications, and Requirements
  • Valid Texas driver’s license within 90 days of hire date; must be able to drive state vehicles and golf carts.
  • EPA Section 608 Technician Certification (Universal) required.
  • R410A Certification preferred, required within 6 months if not unique.
  • North American Technician Excellence (NATE) or HVAC Excellence certifications preferred.
  • Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Technician/Contractor License preferred.
  • Minimum 18 months HVAC mechanic or technician experience.
