Summary

The maintenance mechanic performs a variety of duties including preventive maintenance and repair of buildings, structures, components, building equipment, fixtures and utility components. The mechanic must possess a wide range of skills and knowledge associated with carpentry, plumbing, metal fabrication, mobile equipment operation, soldering, brazing, welding and oxy/acetylene cutting.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. Experience is not a specific length requirement but proof of training or experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties is required. Evidence must be supported by detailed resume descriptions. Applicants will be rated per the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

Screen‑out element:
Applicants first evaluated against the prescribed screen‑out element, usually question 1 in the online questionnaire. Those who meet the minimum acceptable qualification are considered; others are eliminated.

Experience includes paid and unpaid work, including volunteer work through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, Ameri Corps) and other organizations. Volunteer experience may earn credit if the nature of duties and hours are clearly stated.

Responsibilities
  • As a work leader, the maintenance mechanic will convey instructions to the crew, assign tasks and get work underway.
  • Work alongside other crew members to set the work pace and ensure needed plans, blueprints, materials and tools are available.
  • Obtain needed information or decisions from the supervisor on problems that arise during work and maintain current knowledge to answer questions on procedures, policies and technical directives.
  • Ensure sufficient work flow to keep the crew busy.
  • Check work in progress and at completion for compliance with the supervisor’s instructions on sequence, procedures, methods and deadlines.
  • Uphold safety rules.
  • Report status, progress and causes of delays to the supervisor.
  • Provide on‑the‑job training for crew members as needed.
  • Lead a construction crew of 3–9 employees, which may include maintenance mechanics, carpenters, telecommunications mechanics, electricians and pipe fitters; the mix depends on project needs.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule

Monday – Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

Physical Requirements
  • Independently lift objects up to 50 pounds or heavier with assistance.
  • Work in tight spaces and uncomfortable positions for extended periods.
  • Work while standing, sitting, kneeling, reaching, lifting and bending using hand and power tools.
  • Use ladders and climb scaffolds as required.
  • Perform moderate physical exertion: frequent lifting, pushing, pulling, carrying, climbing, bending, stooping, crawling and negotiating confined spaces; occasional heavy lifting and strenuous exertion.
  • Must be in very good overall physical condition.
