Position OverviewThe Diesel Mechanic is responsible for the inspection, diagnosis, maintenance, and repair of heavy-duty diesel-powered equipment used in aggregates, mining, and construction operations. This position ensures equipment reliability, minimizes downtime, and supports safe and efficient production by performing preventative maintenance and repair work on a wide variety of mobile and stationary equipment. The Diesel Mechanic must demonstrate a strong commitment to safety, quality workmanship, and teamwork while working in shop and field environments.
Key Responsibilities- Diagnose mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and engine-related issues on heavy equipment and support vehicles.
- Perform preventive maintenance services including inspections, lubrication, fluid changes, and equipment adjustments.
- Repair and maintain diesel engines, transmissions, differentials, braking systems, steering systems, and suspension components.
- Troubleshoot and repair hydraulic and electrical systems on loaders, haul trucks, excavators, crushers, conveyors, and other aggregate production equipment.
- Conduct equipment inspections to identify safety concerns and required repairs.
- Complete work orders, maintenance records, and inspection reports accurately and timely.
- Operate diagnostic tools, testing equipment, hand tools, and power tools safely and effectively.
- Perform welding, cutting, fabrication, and component replacement as needed.
- Assist with field service repairs and emergency breakdown response.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area and ensure tools and equipment are properly maintained.
- Follow all companies, OSHA, and MSHA safety regulations and procedures.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors, operators, and other maintenance personnel regarding equipment status and repair needs.
- Support continuous improvement efforts to maximize equipment performance and reliability.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Education/Experience- High school diploma or General Education Degree GED is preferred.
- Previous related experience in the construction field.
- Minimum of 3 years experience troubleshooting and repairing diesel-powered heavy equipment preferred.
- ASE certifications and/or manufacturer certifications are a plus.
- Strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, and heavy equipment components.
- Ability to read and interpret service manuals, schematics, and technical documents.
- Proficiency with diagnostic software and electronic troubleshooting equipment.
- Working knowledge of welding and fabrication techniques preferred.
- Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Must pass pre-employment physical, drug screen, and criminal background check.
- Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook.
- Willingness to work in a team environment and assist co-workers or supervisors with other duties as required.
- Must be willing to travel and work away from home when required.
- Must be willing to work nights, weekends, overtime, and on-call schedules when necessary.
- Valid driver's license required; CDL preferred or ability to obtain one.
