Responsibilities

Leads a crew of transportation maintenance technicians and equipment operators performing skilled transportation maintenance activities. Reports to a maintenance section supervisor and assists in administration of the maintenance section. Work requires responding to emergency notification on an as‑needed basis. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Assists during accidents and emergency weather situations to sand bridges and roads and put up warning signs and organize the response of crews.

Estimates and gathers materials and equipment necessary to complete assignments.

Monitors materials testing and inventory of roadway maintenance materials.

Operates light and heavy equipment.

Serves as a lead worker by scheduling daily work assignments; serving as a resource for complex questions and troubleshooting of problems; presenting operational updates to the supervisor; providing input on team members' career conversations; and approving leave requests to ensure operational coverage.

Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Education:

    High School Graduate or Equivalent in general education.
  • Experience:

    5 years roadway maintenance related work (full‑time or prorated part‑time). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted on a year‑per‑year basis.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with “N” endorsement within 90 calendar days of employment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Commercial driver’s license (CDL) with “N” endorsement.
  • Methods, procedures, equipment, and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work.
  • Knowledge of the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • Understanding of storage & transport of hazardous materials.
  • Design, testing and quality control of materials used in construction and maintenance of highways and related structures.
  • Applicable surveying procedures, standards, and instruments.
  • Incident management procedures.
  • Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and specification codes.
  • Maintenance contract inspection procedures.
  • Operating light and heavy highway equipment.
  • Performing calculations to include material and labor estimates, expenses, technical survey data and engineering calculations.
  • Leading, assigning, reviewing, and monitoring the work of others.
  • Coordinating labor, materials, and equipment.
  • Prioritizing and organizing work assignments.
  • Interpreting applicable information.
  • Training in a classroom, office, or field environment.
  • Using applicable hand and power tools, equipment, and mechanical devices of the trade.
  • Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others.
