The Nursing Assistant (NA) serves as caregiver to the resident during the scheduled work period in long‑term care. Provides resident‑centered nursing care and daily living assistance to the assigned resident under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN). The NA delivers age‑appropriate care related to the physical and psychological needs of the resident as per the care plan, follows infection prevention and control policies, and uses personal protective equipment.
Assistance with basic health care needs includes bathing, toileting, grooming, dressing, recording vital signs, providing psychosocial support, and other personal care. The NA assists with transferring, repositioning, and walking using proper transfer techniques and equipment, provides range‑of‑motion and passive exercises, completes tasks related to food preparation and dining, and supports residents with meals and snacks. The NA aids nursing staff with procedures, documents resident interactions, communicates changes in the resident’s condition to the charge nurse, collects non‑invasive body fluid specimens, provides housekeeping and laundry services, supports wellness and recreational programs, and may participate in departmental or organization committees and task forces.
High school graduate or general equivalency diploma (GED) preferred, but not required. Minimum age of 16. Prior clinical or nursing assistant experience in long‑term care preferred. Required Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification with the State Board of Nursing, or state certified CNA within four months of starting the position. CNA training and certification are required and provided by the facility. The candidate must satisfactorily complete yearly department‑specific competency testing, maintain a record of continuing education credits (minimum 12 hours annually), and keep all department‑specific certifications current.
When applicable, the candidate should be certified and registered with the Unlicensed Assistive Person (UAP) Registry. Depending on the responsibilities, this role may also be classified as a Sanford Category II Driver requiring vehicle reporting, proof of a valid driver’s license, and medical fitness per the Sanford Driving Policy.
