About The Opportunity
First Energy Service Co., a subsidiary of First Energy Corp. [FEU], is seeking a Transmission System Operator I. The role involves monitoring the electrical grid, developing contingency plans, preparing and coordinating switching procedures, and communicating with field crews. Entry‑level Operators receive extensive training to prepare for NERC/PJM certification and may advance to the career‑level Transmission System Operator position. Positions are available in Wadsworth, OH.
Responsibilities- Assist in controlling the operation of the transmission system in a safe, reliable, and efficient manner.
- Assist in ordering appropriate operational changes to meet load fluctuations or loss of generation equipment, substation equipment, or transmission lines.
- Assist in issuing transmission switching orders to switchmen and power plant personnel.
- Perform special operating studies and prepare reports, load flows, and other operating and dispatching data.
- Assist in coordinating and operating with system operators from other companies.
- Schedule work on substation, transmission line, and power plant substation equipment.
- Assist in the direct placement of safety tags and issuing clearance or switching controls to appropriate personnel.
- Assist in preparing new or revising existing switching orders and operating procedures.
- Operate the Energy Management System computer application.
- Use First Energy’s corporate computer applications, including EDOA and Access databases.
- Diagnose causes of trouble when interruptions occur in substations or to transmission lines and determine steps to restore service, including rerouting electrical energy.
- Obtain weather information from weather services and interconnected companies to forecast loads.
- Coordinate with regional personnel on matters pertaining to customer problems.
- At least 2–4 years of an accredited engineering or technical school degree, or equivalent experience with a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Satisfy the requirements of the EEi System Operator/Power Dispatching Test (SOPD).
- Be able to meet all First Energy, NERC, and PJM operator certification requirements as responsibilities progress.
- Demonstrate experience in regional dispatching, substation or lines, energy scheduling, or equivalent electric company operations.
- Possess demonstrated interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrate strong analytical skills to process information in a timely and accurate manner.
- Perform analytical calculations such as voltage drops, transformer and circuit loadings, system load and interchange data calculations and verifications.
- Have computer skills (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Have knowledge of the equipment and principles involved in the operation of all components of the electrical system.
