The Electrical Design Technician works under the supervision of an Electric Engineer to prepare and produce electrical engineering designs, schematics, and drawings for construction and maintenance projects.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities
  • Review and interpret engineering drawings and diagrams for existing substation structures and equipment.
  • Create and revise electrical and mechanical engineering designs, schematics, drawings, and documentation for transmission and distribution projects using CAD software.
  • Prepare material lists, bills of materials, cost estimates, and specifications for substation construction projects.
  • Assist in preparing applications and supporting documentation for engineering permits when necessary.
  • Research and explore new technologies that can improve work processes.
  • Prepare drafts for purchase requisitions and blanket releases for substation projects.
  • Assist with material reviews and prepare approval letters for vendor equipment drawings, including large power transformers, high‑voltage circuit breakers, and high‑voltage capacitor banks.
  • Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and other technicians to provide technical support during project implementation.
  • Coordinate with technical personnel to gather and record data for substation design projects and complete as‑built and record print revisions from marked drawings.
  • Support communication across business units regarding project needs.
  • Contribute to a safe environment for substation field personnel, co‑workers, contractors, and the general public.
  • Cross‑check drawings for consistency and completeness, reviewing the quality of information provided.
  • Meet with internal staff and/or contractors for job progress reviews; coordinate equipment shipping schedules; keep records of contractor manpower and material usage; maintain a construction log of significant milestones; investigate job‑site issues; perform field checks of contractor layout work as required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Familiarity with substation design principles, including layout, equipment placement, grounding, and lightning protection.
  • Knowledge of materials and equipment used in substation construction such as transformers, circuit breakers, switch gear, and other components.
  • Knowledge of electrical safety procedures and guidelines related to substation design and construction, including lockout/tagout and arc‑flash protection.
  • Understanding of project management principles, including scheduling, budgeting, and resource allocation.
  • Familiarity with construction practices and techniques, including civil and structural engineering concepts.
  • Understanding of industry codes and standards related to substation design, including IEEE, ANSI, NEC, and IEC.
  • Ability to assist in the management of substation upgrade and new substation projects.
  • Ability to wire control/relay circuits per approved wiring diagrams.
  • Proficiency in computer‐aided drafting (CAD) software.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to learn miscellaneous business and technical software applications.
  • Good organizational skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and other technical documents related to substation design.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as part of a team.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy, with the ability to maintain precise records and documentation.
  • Strong problem‑solving skills to identify and resolve issues in substation designs.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate with cross‑functional teams.
Minimum Requirements for Employment
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Valid State of Ohio Motor Vehicle Operator's License (or ability to obtain within six months of hire).
  • Training and experience that demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed above, such as training in AutoCAD, general construction, electric utility, substations, and transmission and/or distribution.
