Position Summary

Detention Officers contribute to the safety and well-being of the community through the secure custody, supervision, and care of inmates within a safe and professional detention facility.

Officers work under the direct supervision of an on-duty supervisor and are responsible for maintaining security, enforcing facility policies, and supporting daily detention center operations.

Key Responsibilities

Facility Security & Inmate Supervision
  • Maintain a secure detention facility and safe inmate custody.
  • Supervise and control inmate behavior.
  • Monitor inmate activities and daily operations.
  • Conduct searches of inmates, cells, property, and facility grounds for contraband.
  • Transport and escort inmates using approved restraints and procedures.
Communication & Documentation
  • Communicate effectively with staff, inmates, and the public.
  • Operate facility communication systems including telephones, intercoms, and radios.
  • Prepare reports and documentation using proper grammar and factual reporting standards.
  • Read and process legal and administrative documents including:
    • Medical instructions
    • Commitments
    • Release orders
    • Summonses
Inmate Services & Support
  • Assist with inmate classification procedures.
  • Address inmate complaints, grievances, and requests.
  • Process inmate admissions and releases.
  • Maintain inmate property and storage records.
  • Administer basic emergency first aid when needed.
Facility Operations
  • Report facility maintenance and mechanical issues.
  • Maintain assigned equipment, uniforms, and weapons.
  • Perform administrative and operational duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements

This position may require:

  • Walking for extended periods
  • Standing for long periods
  • Kneeling, bending, and stooping
  • Lifting and carrying objects
  • Responding to physical confrontations when necessary
  • Working in challenging and high-stress environments

Officers must be capable of handling hostile, aggressive, or resistant individuals while maintaining professionalism and composure.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must:

  • Be at least 21 years old
  • Be a U.S. Citizen
  • Possess a High School Diploma or GED
  • Have a valid driver's license with an insurable driving record
  • Pass a background investigation
  • Have no felony convictions
  • Have no domestic violence convictions
  • Demonstrate good moral character
  • Be available to work rotating shifts in a 24/7 operation
  • Pass required fitness and written examinations
