Job Description Summary
The Utility Worker is responsible for field operations and maintenance work and performs relief work under various classifications in the wastewater field. The work is performed under direct supervision and requires independent judgment and initiative. The role requires establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with others.
Essential Functions- Performs general clean‑up of grounds and facilities.
- Cleans and paints station and treatment plant equipment and appurtenances.
- Replaces and repairs 5/8” to 2” meters; installs 5/8” to 1” meters.
- Investigates customer complaints and high bills.
- Inspects services and facilities for complaints or investigation work orders.
- Flushes and services mains.
- Inspects fire services and double check valves.
- Collects and tests water samples.
- Turns on and off meters and reads meters of all sizes.
- Designates account numbers for new services.
- Records meter and service repair requirements and completes necessary paperwork.
- Rechecks meter reads and performs necessary repairs on mains, services and appurtenances.
- Opens and operates system valves as required.
- Notifies customers for shutdowns and completes necessary paperwork.
- Assists in setting, replacing or removing 1‑1/2” to 2” meters.
- Checks customer lot size for service installations.
- Locates company facilities to a minor extent.
- Adjust or replace meter boxes as necessary.
- Perform work on site at assigned location.
- Other duties as assigned.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Construction or plumbing experience equivalent to a laborer or apprentice.
- Valid driver’s license.
Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of operation, maintenance and repair of pumps, pump controls and related equipment.
- Knowledge of current principles and practices involved in water and wastewater systems.
- Knowledge of safety regulations, protocols, principles, practices and procedures for water and wastewater systems and work‑site safety.
- Knowledge of plumbing and pipe‑fitting repair and installation.
- Ability to communicate well with others, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written policies, procedures and instructions.
- Ability to use logical and creative thought processes to develop solutions according to written specifications or oral instructions.
- Ability to perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under time‑sensitive deadlines.
- Ability to interact with employees, the public and customers requiring common sense, tact and diplomacy.
Utility Worker: $45,700 – $76,600
Utility Operator I‑III: $49,600 – $122,300
