Evening, weekend, distance education, television and or off-campus classes for UH Maui College and or Outreach sites (Lanai and Molokai) may be assigned as part of regular workload.
This is NOT a remote position – job requires in-person work.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Under general supervision, conduct lectures in Japanese

Maintain a minimum of one office hour per week for each course taught

Prepare course outlines and reports related to teaching and student progress

Work under supervision of department chairperson in integrating teaching efforts with other instructions in the discipline area

Student and peer evaluations and self-assessment of teaching effectiveness are required

May include instructional assignments involving distance education

Commitment to community college principles and philosophy is essential

The college strongly emphasizes the "open door" concept and serves a diverse student and community population

Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

Functionally native oral and written fluency in Japanese, the ability to communicate in English, and one of the following:
Master's Degree in Japanese (language or literature)
Master's Degree in Japanese as a second language
Master's degree in the study of culture or history of the people who speak Japanese
Master's degree in Linguistics, ESL, Education or another language. At least 12 credits of advanced coursework in second language methodology, Japanese literature, Japanese culture, or any combination thereof.

Desirable

Qualifications:

Knowledge in the appropriate field as evidenced by coursework

Prior relevant successful community college or university teaching experience in the field

Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively

Demonstrated ability to work with diverse student populations

Demonstrated knowledge of the Native Hawaiian language, history, politics, culture, practices, and contemporary issues

Successful community college teaching experience

Ability to use writing assignments and integrate teaching of appropriate thinking skills into course content as an integral part of students' classroom learning activities
