Description
Immediate Vacancies:
Lahaina, Kihei, and Lanai
Performs a variety of clerical, para‑professional and other service tasks in support of Police Department activities including the processing of prisoners; and performs other related duties as required.
Distinguishing CharacteristicsThis class is distinguished by its responsibility for performing a variety of civilian tasks in the Maui Police Department. This class does not require a police oath of office, formal specialized police training and the authority of arrest.
Examples of Duties- Performs clerical, radio dispatch, traffic control, non‑criminal investigation, prisoner transportation and escort, parking citation and other service tasks in support of police department activities;
- Reviews reports, records and other materials for accuracy, completeness and conformance with established requirements; searches for and compiles information for reports;
- Maintains operational logs and performs other receiving desk duties;
- Meets the public and answers the telephone to provide general information and receives complaints;
- Processes prisoners by fingerprinting, photographing, taking inventory of property and completing all necessary arrest forms;
- Operates radio communication equipment in transmitting and receiving messages;
- Controls traffic by manually operating directional traffic lights or may direct traffic using hand and arm signals;
- Investigates non‑criminal cases (i.e., abandoned vehicle complaints, animal complaints, lost or found property, etc.);
- Obtains information on pre‑determined minor criminal cases (i.e., misdemeanor theft, property damage, etc.);
- Operates a patrol vehicle or wagon to transport prisoners;
- Escorts pre‑determined low risk prisoners to court;
- Serves penal summons, subpoenas and notices and maintains required records and log pertaining thereto;
- Performs security inspections of assigned locations;
- Maintains police equipment (e.g., stroller meter, first aid kits, flares, etc.);
- Checks vehicles for fuel, oil, water and other operational and maintenance requirements;
- Attends classes and becomes familiar with departmental rules, regulations and procedures;
- May be assigned to issue citations for parking violations;
- May be assigned to use a typewriter;
- Performs other related duties as required.
Training and
Experience:
A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school and one (1) year of clerical and public contact experience.
License Requirement:
Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license (Type
3).
Knowledge of: office practices and procedures; use of standard office machines; departmental rules, regulations, practices and procedures.
Ability to: read and interpret laws, ordinances, rules, regulations, and departmental policies; follow oral and written instructions; operate standard office machines and equipment; deal tactfully and effectively with the public; work harmoniously with others.

Working Conditions:
may be subject to shift and weekend work as required.
