Overall Purpose of the PositionA Sleep Assistant/Trainee develops competency in and performs the basics of polysomnographic testing and associated interventions under direct supervision of a Sleep Technologist.
MajorJob Responsibilities
- Verify the medical order and protocol.
- Complete and verify documentation.
- Explain the procedure and orient the patient to the sleep center.
- Apply electrodes and sensors according to accepted published standards.
- Perform appropriate physiologic calibrations to ensure proper signals.
- Perform routine positive airway pressure (PAP) mask fitting.
- Follow procedural protocols for polysomnographic procedures.
- Follow “lights out” procedures to establish and document baseline values.
- Perform polysomnographic data acquisition while monitoring study-tracing quality to ensure signals are artifact-free. Document routine observations, including sleep stages and clinical events, changes in procedure, and other significant events to facilitate scoring and interpretation of polysomnographic results.
- Follow “lights on” procedures to verify integrity of collected data and complete the data collection process.
- Prepare and calibrate equipment required for testing to determine proper functioning and adjust, if necessary.
- Provide instructions on the set up and use of equipment.
- Download exam data and transmit for review and reporting.
- Schedule and assist with communications with sleep patients.
- Miscellaneous task for the sleep lab department.
- Comply with applicable laws, regulations, guidelines and standards regarding safety and infection control issues.
- Participate in equipment care and maintenance.
- Maintain current CPR or BCLS certification.
- Demonstrate effective written and spoken communication skills.
- Demonstrate appropriate social skills and the ability to follow direction.
Basic knowledge of sleep medicine, human anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology and medical terminology.
High school diploma or GED plus 6 months of direct patient care experience or 1 year of postsecondary education or current enrollment in an accredited educational program leading to an associate degree with an emphasis in polysomnography.
Desired Skills & KnowledgeBasic knowledge of sleep medicine, human anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology and medical terminology.
Licensure & CertificationPreferred: A-Step training, EEG and/or EKG Certifications.
Working Conditions &Physical Requirements
Employees must be physically able to perform, efficiently and effectively, the essential duties of the position which typically require the ability to read without strain printed material the size of typewritten characters, glasses permitted, and the ability to hear the conversational voice, with or without a hearing aid, or the ability to compensate satisfactorily.

Hourly RateStarting @ $24.68; based on experience
