Company Background:
The Marine Institute at Maui Ocean Center (MOCMI) operates Maui’s only land-based coral nursery and leads evidence-based restoration of Hawaiʻi’s reef ecosystems. MOCMI also provides management and coordination of the sea turtle stranding and response network on Maui as well as the rehabilitation of all critically injured sea turtles. In addition, we collaborate closely in support of the Hawaiian monk seal response and conservation efforts.
RoleSummary
The Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for recruiting, onboarding, training, scheduling, and supporting volunteers across all MOCMI programs. This role ensures volunteers are effectively integrated into Sea Turtle In-Field Response, Sea Turtle Husbandry, Coral Husbandry, Monk Seal Response, Outreach, and Education initiatives. The Volunteer Coordinator serves as the primary liaison between volunteers and staff and plays a key role in maintaining a positive, professional, and mission-aligned volunteer culture.
PrimaryResponsibilities
- Provide orientation, distribute relevant protocols, schedule training sessions for the different roles, coordinate ongoing training and education, and provide mentorship to the volunteers.
- Maintain records, manage databases, and complete other administrative duties related to the volunteer program.
- Develop, administer, and review policies and procedures which guide the volunteer programs and services, and reflect the overall values of the organization.
- Identify volunteer assignments that provide meaningful work for volunteers.
- Review applicants on Volunteer Software (i.e. Volgistics), inquire about skills and onboard qualified applicants.
- Create volunteer schedules for the different roles, managing the schedules, ensuring adequate coverage for daily roles, events and programs.
- Distribute Volunteer Handbook and collect signed Handbook agreement and Volunteer Waiver.
- Develop and administer forms and records to document the volunteer activities.
- Strong organizational and administrative skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks among several programs.
- Comfortable working independently and collaboratively.
- Knowledge of Hawaiʻi’s marine species and their unique ecological significance.
- Knowledge of land and marine ecosystems and their local/global threats.
- Passion for marine conservation and community engagement.
