Position: Archaeologist (SR-22)

Overview

Performs professional archaeological work, including surveys, monitoring, research, and documentation in accordance with established State Historical Preservation Division (SHPD), Federal, State, and County historic preservation requirements, under the guidance of the Principal Archaeologist; and performs other related duties as required.

This class is distinguished by performing professional archaeological work, including surveys, monitoring, research, and documentation in accordance with established State Historical Preservation Division (SHPD), Federal, State, and County historic preservation requirements, under the guidance of the Principal Archaeologist; whereas the Principal Archaeologist class serves as a principal investigator for any archaeological project which must be reviewed and approved by the State Historic Preservation Division.

Responsibilities
  • Conducts archaeological surveys, field inspections, and monitoring of cultural and historic sites under the guidance of the Principal Archaeologist;
  • Performs artifact analysis, laboratory documentation, and data collection;
  • Prepares and maintains site records, documentation, maps, and databases in compliance with applicable laws and regulations;
  • Conducts research using historical records, maps, photographs, and literature to support archaeological investigations;
  • Assists in the preparation of regulatory documents such as permits and cultural resource reports;
  • Supports the development of preservation and mitigation plans for archaeological and cultural resources;
  • Provides technical support for interpretive materials, exhibits, and educational programs;
  • Coordinates with community resource persons and governmental agencies as appropriate;
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Training and Experience
: A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with a master’s degree in archaeology or anthropology, or an equivalent field; and one (1) year of archaeological experience, including fieldwork, laboratory analysis, or research, some of which shall include supervised experience working in Hawaii or the Pacific, preferably under a State Historic Preservation Division (SHPD)-permitted project or Principal Archaeologist.

License Requirement
:
Possession of a valid motor vehicle driver's license (equivalent to State of Hawaii Type
3).

Knowledge of
:
Archaeological techniques, methods, and theories; cultural and natural history of Hawaii and/or the Pacific; human osteology; techniques, mapping, documentation, artifact identification, processing and analyses associated with archaeological fieldwork; government and community organizations and functions; use of standard office machines and equipment, including personal computers.

Ability to
:
Understand and interpret complex written material, including laws, rules, regulations and policies; use correct English grammar, punctuation and spelling; communicate information in a succinct and organized manner; produce written information that is appropriate for the intended audience; express information to individuals and groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information; make sound, well-informed and objective decisions;

perceive the impact and implications of decisions; identify problems; analyze problems logically and systematically; determine accuracy and relevance of information; use sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives and to make recommendations; identify rules, principles or relationships that explain facts, data or other information; analyze information, make correct inferences and draw accurate conclusions; identify a need for and gather information from appropriate sources;

organize information to facilitate analysis and decision making; perform work in compliance with SHPD permit requirements and under supervision of a qualified Principal Archaeologist; coordinate with other State, County or Federal government agencies; use a personal computer.
