JOB DUTIES:
This position is located in the Obstetrics/Nursery department of Kaua’i Veterans Memorial Hospital (KVMH) of the Hawai’i Health Systems Corporation (HHSC) Kaua’i Region, a public benefit corporation of the State of Hawai’i. HHSC Kaua’i Region encompasses KVMH and Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital (SMMH), both critical access hospitals; the Kaua’i Region Clinics; and its affiliates. The OB/Nursery unit delivers comprehensive nursing care encompassing prenatal care, management of pregnancy disorders and complications, labor, delivery, and the care of newborns and their mothers.
REGISTERED PROFESSIONAL NURSE (RPN) III (OB/NURSE) responsibilities include providing comprehensive acute nursing care and treatment services on a 24‑hour basis, with a focus on age‑specific nursing care for newborns, adults, and adolescents within the unit. When the department has no patients, the incumbent is cross‑trained to support other nursing departments (e.g., Medical‑Surgical Acute, Long Term Care) as needed. The role involves a combination of 12‑ and 8‑hour shifts, including extended hours, weekends, and holidays to meet operational needs and patient care demands.
This position reports to the Registered Professional Nurse V (Unit Nurse Manager) or their designee.
ResponsibilitiesProvide comprehensive acute nursing care on a 24‑hour basis, including labor, delivery, prenatal, antepartum and postpartum care, fetal monitoring, neonatal resuscitation, and newborn care.
Manage patient care plans, assess patient status, and implement interventions in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team.
Cross‑train and support other nursing departments during low patient volume periods.
Participate in quality improvement, compliance with Medicare, Medicaid, Joint Commission standards, and hospital infection control protocols.
Qualifications- Graduate from an accredited school of nursing; a Bachelor’s Degree in nursing from an accredited college or university is highly desirable.
- Active license to practice as a professional nurse in the State of Hawai’i.
- Minimum six (6) months of professional nursing work experience.
- At least six (6) months of experience in labor and delivery, antepartum/postpartum, and fetal monitoring.
- Valid, current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) in Health Care Provider (adult, child, and infant) issued by the American Heart Association (AHA).
- Required to obtain Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP);
Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) from AHA; and Intermediate or Advanced Fetal Monitoring (IFM/AFM) within six (6) months of employment. - Valid, current certifications from the Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) from AHA are highly recommended.
- Possession of a master’s degree from an accredited college or university school of nursing may be substituted for one year of nursing experience.
- Knowledge of nursing theory, practice, and related sciences.
- Ability to apply nursing theory to assess, plan, and provide care; interpret patient symptoms; prepare comprehensive nursing diagnoses and care plans.
- Effective communication with patients, families, and interdisciplinary team members.
- Familiarity with Medicare, Medicaid, Joint Commission standards, and infection control procedures.
