Minimum Qualifications

Qualifications OverviewThe Hawaii State Department of Education requires a Bachelor's Degree for teacher, librarian, or counselor positions, unless the position is a designated Career and Technology Education (CTE) role. If hired without completing a Teacher’s Education Program, you have a maximum of three years to obtain a valid Hawaii teaching license. You must enroll in a program to continue employment, and each year you must demonstrate active pursuit toward meeting Hawaii licensing requirements set forth by the Hawaii Teacher Standards Board (HTSB).
Upon hire you will need to have a valid Hawaii teaching license or an Emergency Hire Permit.

New employees can expect their first paycheck within the first three pay periods following their start date. Payday is on the 5th and 20th (or the previous business day) of each month.

- Compensation: 10‑month teachers shall be compensated for the applicable Bargaining Unit 05 10‑month salary schedule for a 10‑month work year.
- Paid Sick Leave and Holidays: 10‑month teachers receive 18 days of paid sick leave (six of which can be used for personal or professional development purposes) during the school year, contingent upon meeting collective bargaining agreement conditions.
- Health Insurance:
The State pays a portion of premiums for qualified employees enrolled in a State-sponsored Medical, Drug, Vision, and Adult Dental Plan. - Group Life Insurance:
The State provides a free life insurance policy for employees and retirees. - Premium Conversion Plan:
Participating employees may increase their take‑home pay by having the State deduct health care premiums before payroll taxes are withheld. - Flexible Spending Accounts:
Eligible employees can reduce federal and state income taxes and Social Security taxes through a tax‑savings benefit program. - Retirement Plan:
The State contributes to a retirement plan for eligible employees. Generally, employees with at least ten years of credited service who have reached 62 years of age, or those with 30 years of credited service who are 55 years old, may retire and receive benefits. - Tax‑Shelter Annuity (TSA):
Eligible employees may participate in a tax‑shelter annuity program that allows pre‑tax contributions to an authorized investment service provider. - Deferred Compensation:
This program offers a tax‑deferred, sheltered retirement investment opportunity through voluntary payroll deductions. - Temporary Disability Insurance:
Qualified employees may be eligible for benefits under this program for disability caused by a non‑work related injury or illness. - Social Security:
The State contributes to employees’ Social Security accounts. - Workers' Compensation:
If an employee is injured on the job, benefits covering medical expenses and partial wage support may be provided. - Union & Collective Bargaining:
Employees can join the union for collective bargaining and representation. Some unions provide discounts, insurance, and other opportunities. 12‑month teachers are represented by the Hawaii State Teachers Association.
