Kapaa, Hawai‘i (Kaua‘i Invasive Species Committee – KISC) within the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU)
DUTIES:
Responsible for general program support duties in the KISC program for detection and evaluation of new, naturalized, and potentially invasive plant species on the island of Kaua‘i. Conducts surveys in high risk sites (nurseries, botanical gardens, agricultural experimental stations, roadsides) for unrecorded plant species across the island and assists in the documentation and assessment of newly discovered species. Assists with coordination and logistics of field activities to implement detection and treatment plans.
Maintains plant specimen collections and supplies. Ensures prompt identification of plant specimens collected and those submitted by partner agencies. Uses GPS/GIS and the KISC database to collect, store, analyze and report on survey data. Assists with public relations, outreach, and education program (Plant Pono) to raise awareness about invasive plants. Builds and maintains positive working relationships with nurseries, garden groups, landscapers, and trade organizations to increase participation in the Plant Pono Nursery program.
Makes presentations to private business organizations, public agencies, community associations, and school groups. Interacts regularly in a safe, team‑oriented work environment. Oversees and trains volunteers, interns, and other staff. May present at professional meetings and public outreach events. Promotes sound invasive species management to the public.
- Associate’s Degree from an accredited community college in Botany, Horticulture, Agriculture, Biology, or related field.
- Two to four years of work experience in horticulture, botany, plant production, or natural resources management, including surveys of unknown plant species, invasion biology, and control.
- Knowledge of plant taxonomy, invasion biology, botanical curating protocols, common weedy species in Hawai‘i, Hawaiian biota, and threats from alien species.
- High familiarity with the geographical and cultural landscape of Hawai‘i Island.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team; strong oral and written communication skills.
- Proficient in field identification of native and invasive species and use of botanical keys.
- Ability to write clear, concise reports and articles for publication.
- Proficiency in word processing and data management.
- Valid driver’s license (and if required, personal vehicle insurance).
- Completes required training:
American Heart Association First Aid/CPR, Hazard Communication, and, if applicable, helicopter safety course A100, rappelling training.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Botany, Ecology, Horticulture, or related field.
- Experience in botanical investigations, invasive species early detection programs, plant identification, and curating botanical specimens.
Must be able to hike in remote areas and rugged terrain under inclement weather conditions, and lift and carry up to 40 pounds unassisted.
