Airport Operations Controller I / II – Duties Summary
For the Airport Operations Controller I, the role is a trainee class that includes on‑the‑job training in airport ground operations control, participation in orientation and formal training sessions, study of operating policies and procedures, carrying out specified instructions, and working with higher level personnel.
For the Airport Operations Controller II
, the responsibilities expand to controlling aircraft parking and movement, enforcing regulations and operating radio communications to maintain safety and operational efficiency in airport ground operations, maintaining logs and records, preparing reports, tabulating aircraft revenue landings, and undergoing periodic review for adherence to instructions and correctness of decisions.
All applicants must be available to work rotating shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
SalaryAirport Operations Controller I: $4,139 to $4,899 per month (SR‑12, Steps C to I). Airport Operations Controller II: $4,499 to $5,311 per month (SR‑14, Steps C to I). Salary includes shortage category differential. Hiring rates will be based on availability of funds, applicant qualifications, and other relevant factors.
Minimum Qualification RequirementsTo qualify, applicants must meet ALL of the following requirements:
- Two (2) years of work experience demonstrating the following abilities:
- Meet and deal effectively with people;
- Understand and apply various rules and regulations;
- Prepare reports; and
- Act effectively in emergencies.
- Specialized experience in airport ground operations control (required for Controller II):
- Assignment and control of aircraft parking positions;
- Direction and control of the movement of aircraft and vehicles on the ramp;
- Inspection of runways and airfields;
- Inspection of aircraft parking ramps;
- Enforcement of aircraft and vehicular operational rules and regulations.
- Controller I does not require specialized experience. Controller II requires one (1) year of specialized experience.
- Driver's License:
Applicants must possess a valid driver's license at the time of appointment. - Security Identification Clearance (SIDA) – a federal criminal history records check is required. Applicants must not have been convicted of a disqualifying offense within ten years from the date of application.
