About UsThe North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources (DNCR) manages public natural and cultural resources across the state, including historic sites, museums, state parks, and special programs. Tryon Palace Historic Site is the first permanent colonial and state capitol in North Carolina, dedicated to preserving and interpreting the state's history.
Description of Work- Perform carpentry maintenance and preservation on 41 buildings, including 14 large historic buildings, the 60,000‑square‑foot North Carolina History Center, and 26 supporting buildings, fences, exterior garden furniture, and related objects.
- Assist in painting and other building trade tasks such as minor masonry, walkway and metal work, and door lock system repairs.
- Collaborate with facilities staff in scaffolding, ladder use, construction of wooden platforms and staging, and related storage.
- Maintain cleanliness and service of hand tools, power tools, and stationary machines to ensure safety and proper functioning.
- Purchase necessary supplies for preventive maintenance and repair work in accordance with Department purchasing requirements and guidelines.
- Museum or historic structure experience in maintenance preservation.
- Experience working with tools and materials used in the preservation, reproduction, and fabrication of wooden decorative and architectural elements.
- Experience reading and working from sketches, scaled drawings, and blueprints.
Minimum Education and Experience
- High school diploma or GED, or an equivalent combination of education and experience in mechanical or building trades.
- Applicable EPA certification (Type I, II, III or Universal) may be required for certain tasks.
- Work schedule:
Monday‑Friday 7:30‑4:30 with one hour lunch; rotating on‑call weekend duty; occasional evenings and weekends. - Must lift 50‑100lbs., perform repetitive manual tasks, operate power equipment, work in extreme weather conditions, climb ladders and scaffolding, work indoors and outdoors.
- Valid U.S. driver’s license required, or ability to obtain one within 90 days of employment.
Sign‑on bonus of $1,000 offered for eligible candidates. Eligibility subject to funding availability.
