Plumbing Estimator

Wakefield, Massachusetts

Our client is seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Plumbing Estimator to lead full-scope estimation processes for commercial and mechanical projects. This role is responsible for thoroughly reviewing RFPs/RFQs, performing comprehensive material and labor takeoffs, calculating cost factors, and formulating competitive, accurate bids.

The ideal candidate brings strong expertise in plumbing trade practices, local building codes, and NFPA standards, combined with the ability to build vendor relationships and analyze job profitability in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Bid Preparation & Proposal Management:
Thoroughly review RFPs, RFQs, technical specifications, and construction drawings to prepare detailed cost, labor, and material estimates for project proposals.
  • Onscreen Takeoffs & Costing:
Perform detailed onscreen takeoffs to build itemized material, equipment, and labor requirements. Compute key cost factors for bid planning and scheduling.
  • Vendor & Subcontractor Solicitation:
Actively solicit quotes from material suppliers, equipment vendors, and trade subcontractors; negotiate terms and analyze pricing for cost-effectiveness.
  • Client & Internal

    Collaboration:

Consult with clients, engineers, and project management teams to clarify scope details, address discrepancies, and align the estimate with operational project budgets.
  • Historical Data & Analytics:
Contribute to a centralized cost-estimating database, analyzing post-project actuals against original estimates to track variance, identify cost trends, and implement process improvements.
  • Pre-Bid Field Work:
Represent the company at mandatory job site walkthroughs, pre-bid conferences, and scope alignment meetings.
Qualifications & Requirements

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field—OR 2+ years of dedicated plumbing/mechanical estimating and field experience; or an equivalent combination of education and trade experience.
  • Strong expertise in plumbing systems, plumbing codes, and NFPA standards.
  • Strong mechanical systems understanding (HVAC familiarity is a plus).

Technical & Software

Skills:

  • Proficiency with Digital Onscreen Takeoff/ Estimating Software (e.g., Quickpen, Trimble, or equivalent mechanical software platforms).
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office / Office 365 (Excel, Word, Outlook).

Soft Skills:

  • Exceptional communication, negotiation, and organizational skills.
  • Strong analytical problem-solving abilities and high attention to detail under tight bid submission deadlines.
