Job DescriptionThe successful candidate will provide direct service to students who require additional reading instruction and support. The Reading Specialist will administer diagnostic assessments, select interventions, deliver instruction and monitor student progress. The role includes planning instruction and assessment aligned with District curriculum and State standards, supervising assigned students, maintaining a positive learning environment, and adapting instruction to meet individual learning needs.
The Reading Specialist maintains positive relationships with students, parents, staff and community members.
- Master's Degree with concentration in reading education preferred.
- Current Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education certification as a Reading Specialist, all levels.
- SEI Endorsement.
- Vocational teaching experience a plus.
- Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience (preferred).
- Bachelor’s degree (preferred).
- Citizenship, residency, or work visa required.
- Develops, implements, and tracks student progress on IEP goals.
- Actively participates in and/or chairs IEP team meetings.
- Evaluates students' reading capabilities, diagnoses areas of need, and designs appropriate intervention programs.
- Provides direct instruction to students identified as eligible for reading services in individual, small group, and/or full classroom settings.
- Collaborates with teachers to identify literacy needs, set learning goals, and develop best practices for continuous academic growth.
- Demonstrates knowledge of balanced literacy components.
- Serves as a resource in reading for teachers, administrators, and the community.
- Meets and instructs assigned classes per scheduled locations and times.
- Creates a conducive classroom environment appropriate to student maturity and interests.
- Prepares for classes and provides written evidence of preparation upon supervisor request.
- Encourages students to maintain classroom behavior standards.
- Guides learning toward curriculum goals, establishing clear lesson objectives.
- Employs varied instructional techniques, media, and materials consistent with content standards.
- Implements district mission, philosophy, and instructional standards.
- Assesses and documents student accomplishments regularly, providing progress reports.
- Protects students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Attends staff and department meetings; serves on committees as required.
- Maintains accurate records per law and policy.
- Assists administration with policies governing student life and conduct, establishing classroom rules.
- Availability to students and parents outside instructional day on reasonable terms.
- Strives to maintain and improve professional competence.
- Maintains cooperative relationships with others.
- Maintains open lines of communication regarding student progress.
- Performs other duties as deemed necessary by Superintendent or designee.
184-day work year.
