Essential Job Functions- Enter data into the court’s case management system and answer inquiries about case matters from the general public for Charles County District Court.
- Serve as backup to other assigned clerk functions, such as cashier as needed.
- Perform miscellaneous duties such as filing, boxing old files, and stripping files.
- Receive and enter data into the computer system; process criminal/traffic, civil, and domestic violence case filings; set trial/hearing dates for these cases; enter officer dates into the officer’s portal.
- Greet and assist customers at the counter and over the phone with general questions concerning court information; provide information and resources to customers.
- Serve as backup Cashier when deemed necessary by Supervisor and/or County Clerk.
- Assist clerks in other sections as requested by Supervisor.
- Education: High school diploma (or GED equivalent). A Bachelor’s Degree, Paralegal/Associates Degree, 60 college credits, or Paralegal Certificate may substitute required work experience.
- Experience: One (1) year of work experience, preferably in court operations or in the fields of criminal justice, parole and probation, legal or financial services.
- General office practices, procedures, and equipment.
- Standard legal forms and documents used in the Judiciary.
- Basic English and arithmetic including spelling, punctuation, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
- Customer service and handling problems tactfully and patiently.
- Active listening, empathy, problem solving, and communication.
- Typing on a personal computer.
- Accuracy and attention to detail.
- Use standard office and business equipment, including personal computers, word processing, spreadsheets, database software, copier, cash register, scanner, fax machine, etc.
- Use and maintain alphabetical and numerical filing systems.
- Communicate clearly, tactfully, and effectively with judges, the public, police agencies, attorneys, and other court officials and personnel, both verbally and in writing.
- Understand and abide by departmental rules, regulations, and procedures.
- Provide assistance, guidance, and direction to others in a polite and efficient manner.
- Exercise tact, diplomacy, and impartiality in dealing with the public, law enforcement personnel, and attorneys.
- Follow procedures, verbal and written instructions, and protocols for any given assignment.
- Exercise independent judgement in interpreting and applying appropriate policy, procedure, rule, law, and/or regulation to a situation.
- Apply job-related terminology, policies, procedures, regulations, and laws to define problems, collect data, establish facts, record data, appropriately complete forms, and provide information to customers.
- Pay attention to detail.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, subordinates, superiors, and/or the general public.
- Work within time constraints, meet fixed deadlines, and demonstrate good organizational skills.
- Sedentary work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.
