Heavy Equipment Maintenance Technician Apprentice

State Highway Administration's District 5 – Anne Arundel Counties is currently recruiting for two Heavy Equipment Maintenance Technician Apprentice (HEMT) positions. This is an interview and hire position that is open to anyone who meets the minimum qualifications listed below.

This position will perform routine maintenance and repairs on a variety of vehicles and heavy equipment. Heavy Equipment Maintenance Technician Apprentice is the entry level of repair and maintenance work on motor vehicles, diesel powered equipment and/or construction/maintenance equipment.

Education:

Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience:

None. Notes:
Applicants may substitute documented and relevant experience repairing, servicing and maintaining automobiles, trucks, buses or comparable equipment on a year-for-year basis for the required education. U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as described under the Minimum Qualifications may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education. Certification as a Technician by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) may be substituted for two years of the required education.

Certification as a Master Technician by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) can be substituted for the required education.

1. Candidates appointed to positions in this classification are assigned duties that require the operation of motor vehicles. Employees must possess and maintain a Class C motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland. All applicants must list their license number and expiration date on the application.
2. Employees may be required to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver's License valid in the State of Maryland during the probationary period.
3. Employees in this class may be required to obtain Special Commercial Driver's License Endorsements for Hazardous Materials and Tank Vehicles depending on the type of equipment operated.
4. Employees will be required to successfully complete agency certification programs to be eligible for permanent status in this classification.

This position is considered essential and is expected to be available to work 24 hours/day 7 days/week for inclement weather and/or other emergency events. This position is required to respond to emergency situations. Must be reachable and respond to calls after work hours.
