Position: Mechanical Technician I/II (Maintenance Career Path)

Position Description

This posting will be used to fill Full-time, Safety Sensitive, Represented, positions in the Mechanical Technician proficiency advancement series in the Department of Public Works. The proficiency advancement series consists of the positions of Mechanical Technician I, and Mechanical Technician II and Senior Mechanical Technician. Once hired, employees non-competitively advance through the Mechanical Technician series by obtaining additional skills and certifications and receiving skill based pay increases.

The credentials of each candidate determine which position classification is most appropriate for a candidate to be selected. for. A pre-hire test is conducted prior to an offer of employment in order to determine the candidate's technical skill level and the appropriate starting rate of pay for the position.

NATURE AND VARIETY OF WORK

Work involves responsibility for performance of a variety of maintenance activities that support the efficient and safe operation of wastewater and water pumping stations and treatment plants. Work is primarily mechanical in nature but includes some related electrical duties. Work assignments include the independent performance of preventative and predictive maintenance tasks, inspection of the operating conditions and performance of mechanical equipment and systems, performance of intermediate level corrective maintenance tasks and assisting others in the performance of intermediate level corrective maintenance tasks and assisting others in the performance of advanced corrective maintenance tasks on mechanical equipment and systems.

Work also involves executing specific instructions from a senior co-worker or supervisor. Work is inspected while in progress and upon completion by senior co-workers or supervisors for quality, effectiveness and safety. Employees in this classification are designated essential employees and must report to work as scheduled under all weather conditions with frequent exposure to outdoor temperatures. Employees may be required to work overtime, holidays, weekends and standby duty.

The work of this class requires frequent bending, climbing, stooping, reaching, walking, crawling in tight spaces such as sewer pumping station wet wells and valve vaults where odors and gases are present and lifting heavy items up to 50 pounds.

Skills And Abilities

The Mechanical Technician I,and Mechanical Technician II, and Senior Mechanical Technician are differentiated on the basis of skills, certification, licensing, and demonstrated ability to perform specified skills as defined in the Personal Qualifications Standards of the Maintenance Career Program Manual, a separate component of the skill-based EXCEL Flexible Worker Program.

Mechanical Technician I:
Work involves responsibility for performance a variety of basic maintenance activities that support the efficient and safe operation of wastewater and water pumping stations and treatment plants. Work is primarily mechanical in nature but may include some minor electrical duties. Work assignments include the independent performance of basic preventative maintenance tasks, inspection of the operating conditions and performance of mechanical equipment and systems, performance of basic corrective maintenance and assisting others in performing intermediate and advanced corrective maintenance tasks on mechanical equipment and systems.

Work also involves executing specific instructions from a senior co-worker or supervisor. Work is inspected while in progress and upon completion by senior co-workers or supervisors for quality, effectiveness and safety.

Mechanical Technician II:
Work involves responsibility for performance of a variety of intermediate maintenance activities that support the efficient and safe operation of wastewater and water pumping stations and treatment plants. Work is primarily mechanical in nature but includes some related electrical duties.
