Main Purpose of Job

A Correctional Maintenance Officer I Electrical is the entry level of work involving the custody, security and supervision of adult inmates in maintenance and repair work in a correctional environment. Employees in this classification do not supervise other positions. The main purpose of a Correctional Maintenance Officer Electrical position is the installation, maintenance, and repair of high-and low-voltage electrical systems, the instruction and supervision of incarcerated individuals assigned to the shop, and the maintenance of facility custody and security.

Duties

A Correctional Maintenance Officer I Electrical is the entry level of work involving the custody, security and supervision of adult incarcerated individual in correctional institutions. Employees in this classification do not supervise other positions. Employees in this classification receive close supervision from a Supervisor. Employees are assigned to day, evening, night or rotating shifts.

Position Duties Include
  • Incarcerated individual supervision including: maintaining control and discipline among incarcerated individual workers; conducting searches for contraband items; administering verbal or written disciplinary actions enforcing safety, sanitary, custody and security rules and regulations.
  • Assigning installation maintenance or repair tasks to designated incarcerated individual performing at various levels of proficiency in the trade.
  • Training and instructing incarcerated individuals regarding methods and techniques, use of tools and equipment, and proper care of tools and equipment.
  • Inspecting and approving/disapproving all work performed by incarcerated individuals for adherence to quality standards.
  • Estimating time, materials and supplies to conduct assigned maintenance or repair tasks.
  • Ordering materials and supplies, keeping records and inventory of materials and tools.
  • Personally preform certain installation, maintenance or repair takes on electrical infrastructure.
  • Planning and implementing procedures.
  • Operating hand and power tools and equipment needed; maintaining record of time.
  • E scorting third party vendors and inspecting completed work assignment.
Minimum Qualifications Education

Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education as described in the Maryland Correctional Training Commission regulation.

Experience

Two years of electrical experience.

Notes
  • The above educational requirement is set by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission in accordance with Correctional Services Article, Section 8-209, Annotated Code of Maryland.
  • Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience in correctional institutional specialty codes in the criminal justice field of work at a rate of two years of military experience for the required experience.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with heavy commercial building infrastructure.
  • Experience maintaining standby generators, transfer switches, and large kitchen/laundry appliances.
  • Experience with motor control wiring, fire alarms, security CCTV, and data networks.
  • Ability to apply the National Electrical Code.
  • Experience with the maintenance and repair of existing electrical infrastructure in commercial buildings.
  • Experience with the installation and repair of control wiring for motors, automation, fire-alarm, security CCTV and data networks.
  • Experience with inspection, testing and repair of electrical appliances including kitchen and laundry equipment.
Licenses, Registrations and Certifications
