The Arc Southern Maryland is currently hiring full‑time Vocational Support Professionals. A VSP provides onsite instruction, support and encouragement to people with developmental or intellectual disabilities. The VSP works as a member of a team with objectives such as person‑centered planning, crisis management, and ensuring all duties required by the employment site are met.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Employment, Volunteer and Recreational Skills & Supports
  • Assist individuals to meet employment goals by teaching skills, providing supports, and building on strengths.
  • Support development of friendships and relationships in employment, volunteer and recreational settings.
  • Provide on‑site skill instruction and overall job training while encouraging natural support systems.
  • Maintain frequent positive contact with employers, family members, and other important people.
  • Provide information on behalf of the person receiving supports to community, business and civic organizations.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable regulations such as MOSHA, DDA, health and fire.
  • Develop task analyses as necessary.
  • Assist sites in developing adaptive methods as needed.
  • Guarantee that activities comply with agency, federal and state guidelines.
  • Provide or assist with personal care as necessary.
Medication Administration
  • Assist with and/or dispense medication (as certified), or other prescribed medical treatments.
Community and Service Networking
  • Assist in developing relationships with prospective employers.
  • Help identify needs for community supports and initiate connections.
Participant Empowerment
  • Assist individuals to plan, make informed choices, follow through on responsibilities and speak on their own behalf.
Communication
  • Use effective, sensitive communication skills to build rapport and adapt to different styles.
  • Learn and use appropriate terminology, providing explanation to ensure understanding.
Facilitation of Services
  • Maintain collaborative professional relationships with individuals and all support team members.
  • Assist or facilitate the implementation of an individualized plan to achieve specific outcomes derived from preferences, needs, and interests.
Advocacy
  • Facilitate, assist, or represent individuals when barriers arise.
  • Interact with and educate employers and community members when relevant to individuals’ needs.
Crisis Intervention
  • Identify and evaluate crisis situations, defuse them, and contact necessary supports.
  • Monitor crises, discuss incidents with authorized staff and individuals, adjust supports and environment, and comply with reporting regulations.
  • Implement behavior plans as needed.
Documentation
  • Maintain accurate records and submit them to appropriate sources in a timely fashion.
  • Maintain confidentiality and ethical standards.
Organization Participation
  • Comply with all agency guidelines, procedures, and practices.
  • Incorporate sensitivity to cultural, religious, racial, disability and gender issues in daily practices.
Education, Training & Self‑Development
  • Attend, complete, and pass all required training, initially and ongoing.
Additional Duties and Responsibilities
  • Accomplish all tasks as appropriately assigned.
  • Demonstrate appropriate role model behavior at all times.
  • Attend and participate in staff and team meetings.
  • Contribute to program evaluations by responding to surveys, interviews, or discussion groups.

Education and Experience
  • Graduation from accredited high school or GED.
  • 2 years of competitive employment.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of formal and informal supports available in the community.
