What You'll Do

As an Equipment Operator, you'll help maintain and improve City infrastructure while operating a variety of equipment and vehicles.

Responsibilities include:

  • Operating heavy and light equipment to maintain and repair streets, storm sewers, ditches, parks, and public properties.
  • Performing road maintenance including patching, paving, concrete work, and guardrail installation.
  • Setting up safe work zones and traffic control while following all safety regulations.
  • Maintaining parks, rights-of-way, public buildings, and other City facilities through mowing, landscaping, repairs, and general maintenance.
  • Trimming and removing trees using specialized equipment including bucket trucks, chainsaws, and chippers.
  • Operating snowplows, loaders, skid steers, and de-icing equipment to keep roads and sidewalks safe during winter weather.
  • Operating equipment such as street sweepers, front-end loaders, and other specialized machinery.
  • Assisting other City departments during emergencies, natural disasters, special projects, and mutual aid efforts.
What We're Looking For

We're seeking dependable, safety-minded individuals who enjoy working as part of a team and aren’t afraid of hard work.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Valid Michigan Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL Group A with N (Tanker) endorsement) and current medical certification.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience in heavy equipment operation and general maintenance.
  • Municipal Public Works experience is a plus.
  • Snow removal experience is desirable.
  • Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, emergency call-ins, and extended overtime during winter weather events, natural disasters, and City activities. (Regular work hours are M-F 7am-3:30pm)

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to adapt to changing priorities.
  • Basic computer skills for daily job functions.
Physical Requirements

An employee in this position is required to regularly work in the field directly participating in heavy manual labor or observing work in progress. While in the field, the employee is required to operate light and heavy equipment and access work sites including confined spaces. Work sites may involve fumes, dust, chemical or other hazardous materials, loud machinery and equipment and other dangers.

An employee in this position must have the strength, stamina and physical coordination needed to perform heavy manual labor and skilled equipment operation in outside weather conditions, including prolonged exposure to extreme heat and cold.
