Civil Rights Compliance Coordinator
On an on-call/substitute basis, this position is responsible for providing professional health care to students and staff to prevent, identify, and/or remediate health problems which may impair learning, social adjustment, or emotional well-being of students.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS- Assess the physical, mental, and environmental health needs of students as they relate to the educational environment in accordance with state and local mandates.
- Provide primary health care to students including initial assessment, management of illness and /or referral to other health professionals, monitoring of chronic diseases, health supervision, and promotion of health life-styles, disease prevention, and the coordination of services when specialized care is required.
- Serve as a health advocate of students and a consultant to educational staff.
- Implement and/or monitor appropriate health plans to meet the medical, health, and safety needs of students for designated schools.
- Provide support to Health Room Assistant and designated school employees to safeguard the health and welfare of the students in their care, to include ongoing training where necessary, maintenance of health care records, immunization forms and health plan monitoring in designated schools.
- Respond to health related emergencies in designated schools.
- Regulate and dispense prescribed medication and/or treatments as required.
- Provide health counseling and guidance to students, school personnel and parents, to include communicating with non-English speaking students and their parents as needed.
- Perform vision and hearing screening as required and in accordance with the Washington State Codes.
- Provide Health Clinic coverage in the absence of Health Room Assistants.
- Provide one to one nursing care to designated students in the absence of the assigned nurse.
- Cultivate and model appropriate and cooperative behavior, including protecting confidential information, consistent with district ethical guidelines.
- May serve on various district committees and/or departmental work teams.
- Perform related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position.
- Reports jointly to the Building Principal and the Director of Health Services.
- Required to deal with a wide range of student, staff and public behaviors and needs in a positive and service oriented manner.
- May occasionally deal with distraught or difficult students or parents.
- May be required to transport students.
Education and Experience
- Current CPR/First Aid and AED certification.
- Valid Registered Nurse License for the State of Washington
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
Skills And Abilities
- Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
- Experience in nursing duties with children/teenagers preferred.
- Experience managing diabetes and life threatening conditions (asthma, anaphylaxis, seizure disorder) preferred.
- Proficient in nursing skills preferred or willing to train (Ex: NG or G tubes, catheters, pumps)
- Ability to work independently as well as in collaboration with assigned Health Room Assistants.
- Ability to multi-task and prioritize student needs.
- Computerized record keeping skills.
- Ability to work with students with a wide range of behaviors, emotional disabilities, and medical conditions.
- Ability to respond to and handle emergency situations in a calm, professional and effective manner.
- Knowledge/awareness of own cultural identity and how this influences behavior, and desire to learn about the cultural identity of others.
- Ability to establish and nurture an environment that promotes cultural competence and equitable treatment of staff, students, and patrons of the district.
- Excellent human relations, communication, and organizational skills; ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, and parents.
- Ability to maintain state/federal special education compliance requirements including timelines involving special needs or medically fragile students.
- Knowledge of community resources and family service agencies.
