Watershed Scientist – Fish & Wildlife Research Scientist 1 – Permanent –
Job Overview
Apply to join the Washington State Department of Fish & Wildlife (WDFW) Habitat Program – Science Division. This full‑time, permanent position is based in Olympia, Washington, with potential for other statewide duty stations. The role may offer a telework option, but on‑site presence is required as needed.
Key Responsibilities- Develop and write detailed research proposals focused on stream ecology and habitat questions.
- Independently lead the design, implementation, and management of scientific investigations—including literature syntheses, field studies, modeling, data processing, analysis, and visualizations.
- Produce high‑quality scientific reports and manuscripts; target one peer‑reviewed publication per year.
- Collaborate with colleagues on projects, presenting findings to technical groups and professional societies.
- Serve as subject‑matter expert on physical watershed processes and functions, keeping abreast of new methodologies.
- Coordinate and support direct reports with research projects, including permitting, safety, performance management, and training.
- Assist with hiring, onboarding, and staff mentorship.
- Work primarily in an office; 10‑60% fieldwork depending on season.
- Fieldwork may involve extreme weather, rough terrain, and handling equipment up to 30 lbs.
- Possible travel within Washington and occasional overnight stays; overnight out‑of‑state travel for training or conferences.
- Full‑time, 40 hr/week with occasional evening or weekend work.
- Master’s degree in watershed science, ecohydrology, fluvial geomorphology, hydrogeology, environmental engineering, hydraulic engineering, or closely allied field.
- At least two years of professional experience designing, conducting, and leading scientific investigations.
- One first‑author article published or in press in refereed literature.
- Experience leading and coordinating collaborative research projects, including instream flow studies.
- Strong knowledge of fluvial processes, ecological implications, and advanced statistical or geospatial analysis.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Three or more peer‑reviewed articles with at least two first‑author publications.
- Three or more years of experience in ecohydrology, fluvial geomorphology, hydrogeology, or allied fields.
- Experience in hydraulic, groundwater, hydrologic, or ecohydrological modeling.
- Programming skills in R or Python.
- Completed online application.
